The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census, making it the 5th most populous municipality in that state and also its thirteenth most populous city. It is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Administratively, Zanesville is located within Wayne County; its largest employer is Greater Dayton Chamber of Commerce. Zanesville was founded by General James K. Polk in 1837 as a stop on his way to become elected US president on behalf of General Andrew Jackson's re-election campaign. As American settlement increased throughout what are now Kentucky and Tennessee, Zanesville became an important market center for goods brought overland from those states by stagecoach and wagon route. A post office was established at Zanesville in 1840, and remained in operation until 1907. The first store in what is now downtown Zanesville was built about 1851 by John Hargrave; it burned down about two years later but served as a meeting place for early settlers who gathered to plan their community's organization and development. The first school opened in1861; it closed about 1865 because of lack of funding but served as one of the first examples of public education in this area outside Cincinnati or Dayton (the county seat). In 1902 ZaneVILLE incorporated as a village with a population of 1,500 people; however, due to low cotton prices during World War I (and other factors), Village status was revoked in 1922 and all residents were forced to move into rural areas around town beginning that year until they were finally allowed back into Village status after Hurricane Edwin damaged parts of town in 1985. In 1990 City Council approved plans to demolish much older buildings between First Street and Market Street – including some dating back to the 1830s – which would create an open space known today as "Old Town Square." That same year also saw the opening of Downtown Park which included new shopping malls (including five large department stores) adjacent tohistoric downtown core businesses such as The Post Office & Grocery Store/Pioneer Courthouse Museum (now called Palace Place), PinnacleBank Arena (now home to the University Of Dayton men’s basketball team), then-new YMCA headquarters building on Fourth Street NW., numerous small businesses totaling more than 1 million square feet across three floors inside former Wernher Pharmacy Building on Main Street NW.,First National Bank plaza complete with several restaurants/bars/nightlife venues/an indoor water park/entertainment complex completed just south east corner First Street NE., twin towers completed earlier this decade housing Overpass HealthCareZones locations adjacent both north side Main St./northwest corner Sixth Ave./ southeast corner Third Ave../southwest corner Second Ave./one tower completed earlier this decade housing Wells Fargo Center operations locations adjacent northeast corner Third Ave.. All these developments have contributed greatly increased economic activity along many streets near downtown core since 2000 when zoning changes allowed larger buildings without permits downtown while maintaining historic character zones along streets near central business district."
