Zanesville, Ohio is a city located in the county of Lucas in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 41,827 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Lucas County. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH–Summa Township Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Zanesville was George Robertson and his family who arrived on July 4, 1811 from Scotland via Erie Canal. Zanesville's first post office opened in 1814 and its first mayor was James Cranchwoodading (1817-1821). In 1825, Zanesville became a town when it split from Dryden Township. The original village charter granted to Zanesville by General David Hunter allowed for an election held annually on December 12th to select a board of trustees which would manage public schools and other functions associated with town government such as fire protection and drainage systems. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union General John A. McClernand attacked Zanesville while retreating from Vandalia after driving Confederate General Robert Ewell out of central Ohio near Lebanon Junction. McClernand's men burned down almost all of what remained of the original village center including most of the courthouse and jail before withdrawing back into Union lines several miles westward across Summit Lake towards Chillicothe where they destroyed millsinery operations owned by local women who had sided with Ewell against McClernand's forces. This attack has been called one ofthe worst examples"of scorched earth tactics employed during wartime." Aftermath: After General McClellan took over command from Grant following Grant's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865 he ordered all military installations within five miles (9 km) west of Richmond be destroyed including those east of Summit Lake that were still under Union control due to their strategic location between two railroad lines linking Cincinnati with points north and south respectively."ZanesVILLE," "The Farmington Patriot" wrote on October 1st 1865HTML> While McClernand's troops were destroying equipment northeast of Summit Lake they also burned down nearly all remaining buildings & wells within 500 yards (<500 m) around Centerburgh Landing & Greenough Landing-- leaving behind only charred stumps.

Zanesville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Fayette County. The population was 33,890 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Fayette County. Zanesville is located on the Maumee River and is surrounded by Muskegon Heights to the north, Bellefontaine to the east, and Ionia Heights to the south. The first known settlement in what is now Zanesville was dated to 1795 when French traders arrived on a canoe from Detroit. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Cuyahoga who purchased land from Chief Justice John Marshall for $2,000 cash on November 3, 1807. This made Zanesville one of the earliest towns in Ohio. In 1812, General James Hennepin built Fort Erie at present-day Zanesville after capturing Fort Dearborn on Lake Michigan during his campaign against United States President Andrew Jackson. After Hennepin's victory over Jackson at Battle of Fallen Timbers near Mound City (now part of Toledo), he moved his forces into what is now Fayette County and established Fort Erie as his military post west of Mansfield Township line on December 24th, 1812. George Rogers Clark founded Cincinnati along with several other small settlements in Northwest Territory during 1800s as part of efforts by American expansionists to gain control over territory northwest of Ontario that were then claimed by Great Britain as part of her empire including much present-day Michigan Territory east of Ottawa River and parts Maine and New Brunswick including present-day Toronto also claimed by Great Britain as part of her empire including much present day Ontario Territory eastof Ottawa River . In 1805 Congress created Northwest Territory which included all or most of what are now Ontario Territories except Canada West which was headed by Peterborough Purchase Treaty negotiated between US President George Washington and British Prime Minister John Adams with French Canadian negotiator Pierre Elliott Trudeau joining them later that year when Adams became president). On January 14th, 1810 Washington signed an act creating Miami District containant all or most today's Wayne County northeast thereof including parts preceedingtoday's Muskegon Heights area lying within today's Fayette County township line thence northerly across Beaver Creek into today's Clinton Township thence easterly through Mill Woods onto Grand Rivers Road where it met its confluence with Sycamore Creek thence due westerly thru this woodland & creek bed thereto flowing southerly into Beaver Creek estuary & mouth . When Indian Removal Act went into effect May 10th 1795 those lands included within Miami District were ceded to United States via Treaty with Shawnee Nation according to provisions set out in Article XIII section 2 Clauses 1 through 5a re: “All Lands Southward Of The Mississippian River As Settled By Our Ancestors Who Dwelled Upon And Lived In That Part Of America Before The European Invasion [emphasis added]” Those lands lying withinClinton Township aforesaid became official portionryoftheMiamiDistrictonJanuary14th1810undertheTreatybetweenWashingtonandAdams
