The Zanesville, Ohio Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1921. The unit was initially organized as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment of Artillery and was redesignated the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment of Artillery in 1922. In 1926, the regiment was redesignated the 9th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and in 1951 it became part of the 2nd Infantry Division. The brigade combat team was reassigned to the 6th Infantry Division in 1968 and then to the 4th Infantry Division in 1992. In 1998, the brigade combat teamwas re-designated as Headquarters & Service Support battalion and remained with 4th Infantry Division until its disbandment in 2002. In October 2001, Zanesville’s city council unanimously voted to establish an Army National Guard detachment for City Services Unit #1 (CSU-1). CSU-1 is a municipal Police Department that provides law enforcement services to residents of Zanesville. The detachment was activated on November 21st 2001 and served as a reserve force for three years before being designated active duty on January 16, 2005. On July 15, 2006 CSU-1 lost their first officer when Sgt. Michael Pinsky died from injuries he sustained while serving as an infantryman with Company H of 3d Battalion 5th Regiment of Artillery during Operation Iraqi Freedom I - his fifth deployment since September 11 terrorist attacks; his third tour as a reservist officer with this unit since becoming eligible for retirement after 20 years service including 10 deployments with 3/5 ARVN/USF battalion). On September 302006 Corporal James Bowers also passed away due to injuries he sustained while serving with Company K (9TH INF) During Operation Enduring Freedom II - his sixth deployment since joining 3/5 ARVN/USF battalion; his fifteenth tour as a reservist officer with this unit). Today there are no active duty members assigned to City Services Unit #1 (CSU-1) which means that it is effectively defunct although it still exists within city government records under “Unactivated” status pending future activation or dissolution by higher authority……….. The history of the United States Army in Zanesville, Ohio dates back to 1812. The first U.S. military presence in the area was a detachment of artillery under General David Dennison, which arrived from Fort Erie on May 14, 1812. The detachment consisted of eight cannons and one company of infantry under Captain John Cranch, Jr., and served as part of the garrison at Fort Mifflin until December 1, 1812. In 1813, the Ohio militia was raised and ordered to join forces with the British army in North America during the Napoleonic Wars. During this time period, Zanesville became an important military post because it had access to supplies and transportation within reach for both sides. In October 1813, General Simon Bolivar Perry led a force consisting of over 2,000 men westward from Pittsburgh through Indiana onto what is now West Virginia Territory in order to capture Harper’s Ferry. After completing their march across western Pennsylvania and into Virginia on October 24th-27th, they reached Harper’s Ferry on November 9th after a week-long campaign that included amphibious assaults along the Potomac River. On November 13th-15th, Perry made his final attack against Mount Vernon using cavalry and artillery against heavily fortified walls that resulted in a spectacular victory that ended British control over Upper Virginia for good. As a result of this battle, Zanesville became an important military post throughout much of central Appalachia and played an important role during both World War I (1914-18) and World War II (1939-1945).
Zanesville is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. Zanesville was founded in 1827 as an agricultural settlement on the Scioto River by Col. George Washington Zane and his wife Elizabeth Cochran Zane. At first it was called "New Ross." The town grew rapidly after settlers began to arrive in droves from Kentucky and other parts of the eastern United States during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1850, Zanesville had reached its peak population with over 30,000 people living in just under two hundred blocks of downtown. However, growth stopped abruptly around 1860 due to increasingly difficult economic conditions throughout much of Ohio and Indiana following Andrew Jackson's victory in the American Civil War. In 1867, Zanesville reverted back to its original name: New Ross (although some residents continue to call themselves "Zanevilles"). During Reconstruction in America following the end of World War II, local businesses helped create a new boom for Zanesville by importing Korean women who worked as domestic servants and selling them into marriage throughout Ohio andIndiana; this trend continued until the late 20th century when jobs lost out due to technological advances such as indoor plumbing and air conditioning. Zanesville, Ohio is a small town located in the southeast corner of Ohio. The population was 9,597 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all of it land. The first settlers in what would become Zanesville were three families from Lancaster County who arrived in 1796. They built a cabin on what is now Park Avenue and named it for their old home place - Zanesville Court House. On July 4, 1805, frontier trader John Chisum made his final purchase of land here from the Shawnees and name this new location "Zanesville" after one of his earlier settlements in that part of Ohio - Zionsburgh on the Scioto River. In 1811-12, George Washington's army passed through Lucas County on its way to battle with Mexico at Buena Vista Creek near Dayton. A detachment numbered about 20 men under Lieutenant Colonel Peter Porter camped east of present day intersection of High Street and Elm Street on Indianola Creek where they built a stockade which served as their winter quarters until March 11th when they moved westward across Beaver Creek into what is now Delaware Township and established Fort Wayne Campground which became Fort Wayne on April 14th, 1812 during Ulysses S Grant's Mexican War expedition against Santa Anna’s Army led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna On December 5th 1860 Zanesville residents subscribed to The Cincinnati Enquirer’s call for secession from the Union because they did not agree with President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued January 1st 1861 Negro Troops loyal to Alexander Stephens had fraternized with Confederate forces operating in neighboring Ohio prior to batteries being erected at every courthouse along downtown streets throughout Cincinnati including that within our own City Limits making themselves targets thereby openly inviting war against us; therefore we must today secede this City limits Township form The Union If We Do Not Unite With Our Northern brethren In an effort To Save Our Homes And Civilization From Destruction
Zanesville was founded in 1781 by the brothers John and James Zanes. The first store was built on First Street. In 1812, a school was started in what is now the Zanesville Library. In 1827, George Stephenson built the first railroad line through Zanesville. The town became a city in 1907.
