The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Youngstown were French Canadians who founded a small village on the Scioto River near present-day downtown Youngstown in 1788. In 1821, Cleveland was founded as an independent town on the east side of Lake Erie by British colonists and traders; it quickly became an important manufacturing center due to its coal mines and other resources. In 1830, when Cleveland merged with Youngstown to become one city under one government, both towns continued to grow rapidly with their own industries but were eventually overshadowed by Detroit during that city's rapid growth during the late 19th century (see Decline of Detroit). Youngstown, Ohio is a city in central Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 61,589 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Mahoning County. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in America, with an increase of 3.5% from 2000 to 2010. The area that became Youngstown was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1814, when Ohio became a state, Youngstown was part of Holmes County. The town's first mayor was Nathaniel Greenough and its first treasurer was John Prentice. In 1825, Youngstown became part of Taney County and then again in 1836 when Lucas County was created. On February 20, 1840, Ohio voters approved a charter for the city of Youngstown which gave it a place within the new state government as well as power to levy taxes and make decisions on local issues such as education and fire protection. The charter also allowed for oil drilling near Youngstown but no production took place until 1865 when Cleveland entrepreneur George Wernher leased land east of town for an oil refinery called Wernher & Company. In 1849–1850, construction began on what would become FirstEnergy Park – now known as Mesabi Energy Stadium – adjacent to downtown Youngstown. Construction continued through 1953 before being stopped due to economic conditions caused by World War II; however resumed following 1945 redevelopment which used war surplus materials available at low prices after Allied forces destroyed enemy factories throughout Europe including those in Germany that had produced tanks and other military hardware needed by Japan during World War II! Today much older steel frame buildings from that time remain largely unchanged (e.g., Stroud Tower) while newer buildings were built using more recent technologies following post-war reconstruction patterns across North America! At $7 million dollars per mile (at current market rates), FirstEnergy Park’s ribbon development project included over 1 million square feet (100 acres) of office space along with over 100 acres (40 hectares) devoted to open-air recreation features such as baseball diamonds and soccer fields; today Mesabi Energy Stadium remains one of America’s largest sports venues with seating for 80,000 people! FirstEnergy Park hosted games between Cleveland Indians/National League teams from 1946-1955 while also serving as home field for several amateur clubs including Cleveland Toros/ American Association team beginning play there in 1948; later played host to various college football games featuring top programs such as Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs Akron University Buckeyes game on September 25th 1951 after KSU vacated their stadium located east of downtown Cleveland due to financial problems - thus becoming only second collegiate sport game ever played at FirstEnergy Park behind only Joe Louis Arena ! Also during this period many high profile concerts were held at FirstEnergy Park including Elvis Presley “A Star Is Born” show on January 16th 1957 followed two weeks later by . . . Little Richard “Tutti Frutti” concert on March 15th 1957 !!!!! These performances helped change not only music taste but popular culture overall within Greater Cleveland area regarding traditional rock 'n' roll !!!!! As mentioned earlier numerous other events occurred at or around FirstEnergy Park during this era which have still generated interest decades later (e.g., Marvin Gaye performance prior to his death at age 47 years old occurring October 26th 1977); see below under "Other Events" section for more information about these events!!
