Youngstown, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 51,471 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Mahoning County after Youngstown, Pennsylvania. The first Europeans to visit what is now Youngstown were French fur traders in the 17th century. The area was part of Great Britain until 1783 when it became part of the United States of America as a result of the Treaty of Paris following American independence from Great Britain. In 1801, John Dennison founded what is now Dennison Township on land he bought from Native Americans near present-day downtown Youngstown. That year saw also its first commercial establishment with the opening by Dennison and his friends of a tavern known as "The Hermitage." In 1813, Detroit resident George Washington Stonington sold 2,500 acres (10 km²) east of downtown to Samuel Tilden for $250 cash and 500 acres (1 km²) west to him for $600 cash within minutes after learning about Detroit's bankruptcy proceedings that same day. This purchase initiated what would become one of East Cleveland's most important economic sectors – real estate development followed soon thereafter throughout much of Northeast Ohio culminating with Youngstown's incorporation as a town on April 15, 1815. During World War II several plants operated by General Motors were located in or near Youngstown; these include two GM factories which produced tanks and other armored vehicles: Lima Arsenal No 1 outside today’s Downtown core (the site where former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan’s body once sat), and Mt Pleasant Arsenal inside today’s City Hall Annex building on Main Street just south/west off Holmes Avenue). Other production sites included Lima Naval Ammunition Plant on Canfield Road southwest of town center; this plant manufactured munitions including torpedoes and mines during World War II; and an aluminum smelter on Scioto River north/northwest Of town at current dayite township limits just before getting into Indian Lake
