The city covers an area of 382 square miles (1,022 km²). It is located on the southern bank of the Great Miami River at its confluence with the Scioto River. The first human activity in what is now Youngstown occurred about 9800 BC when two groups of Native Americans encountered each other near present-day West Side Cemetery. One group may have been led by a chief named CVIII or Cixivieeo. Archaeological evidence suggests that Indian traders and travelers from as far away as northeast Canada visited this area during pre-historic times. By 1000 AD, some people lived here permanently and began to build permanent villages around 900 BC called Muskingum Village and Miamisburg Village respectively. They were soon joined by others who immigrated over time including many Illini ( descendants of French colonists) and Irish immigrants who arrived in waves starting in 1810 until 1840. Those arriving after 1840 primarily came from New England via Erie Canal which connected Detroit with Buffalo via Cleveland%. The first ship to navigate through these waters was HMS "Canada" on July 4, 1795 when Commodore John Graves Simcoe sailed upriver from Lake Erie for what would be his last voyage as governor general before his retirement two years later on October 15th aboard "Queen's Revenge". Upon return home Admiral Robert Fulton purchased shares in HMCS "Canandaigua" which he renamed USS Constitution on May 12th 1807 after President George Washington's personal favorite ship also commanded by Commodore John Graves Simcoe.. In 1808 Congress authorized expenditures for an expedition to determine whether northern California was an open country or not under consideration for admission into the United States.. On July 6th USS Constitution sighted land - it was Santa Barbara County - about midway between Point Conception (near modern day Toledo) and San Francisco Bay even though no shoreline was visible beyond bluffs extending out into what are now Vallejo Bay (part of San Pablo Gulf), today’s Marin County.. A light breeze brought ashore Lt.(jg.) James Cook along with his officers & men upon landing.- He ordered cannons crewed with eight ten pounders drawn alongside shore & discharged them pointblank into scrub brush 10 feet offshore - effective against hostile natives!
