Xenia was founded in 1825 by John Holcombe, who named it after his friend Xenophon of Athens, Greece. The first post office in Xenia was established in 1827; it closed in 1850. The present courthouse was built in 1916 and dedicated by Judge Wm Halsey Bohlen. Xenia, Ohio was an early American settlement on the Great Lakes region. It was founded in 1795 by brothers James and David Xenia. The first permanent settlers were soldiers from the British Army who were sent to stop the French from establishing a base on the lakes. They arrived with only 2 horses and 4 rifles, but quickly erected a small frame house, built a mill and began trading with other settlements on the lakes. The town of Xenia was founded in 1801 by James Xenia and his brother David. The first post office was established in 1802. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the junction of several water routes and its close connection to major trade centers in Canada and Illinois. In 1830, xenia had a population of 350 people; it had grown to 1,500 by 1850. In 1836, John Fenton became the first white settler in Xenia when he purchased land from James Xenia for $1 per acre. Fenton developed what is now known as Fenton Park which included a manor house, two stores, four homes, a blacksmith shop, a barn and three schools; it served as both community center and farmland until 1907 when it closed down due to increased costs associated with maintaining it during World War I (1914-18). During World War II (1939-1945), xenia played an important role in providing food for Allied troops stationed around Lake Erie; many of these troops are buried at nearby Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. xenialandsted@gmail.com
