Xenia is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Xenia was founded by Englishmen on July 4, 1811 as part of the Northwest Territory. On April 12, 1821 it became a village and on November 6, 1826 it became a town. The name Xenia is derived from Greek mythology's character Europa (known to some as Xena), who was taken captive by Achilles and ransom released by King Heracles. The prefix "xeno" means "foreign," so xenia referred to its location east of Akron and west of Canton in what was then part of British America. In 1870 the Ohio General Assembly designated Xenia as the county seat for Hancock County because Athens had been moved to Athens Township in that year and because taverns were being established in various parts of Hancock County without township designation or election authorization. In 1903 Xenia voters approved incorporation as a city with a five-member board of trustees form which it has remained ever since; township status has never been granted again ★★

In 1849-50, there were several earthquakes that struck Ohio causing significant damage to buildings and crops. However, these events did not have any impact on the growth of Xenia or its people.
