Xenia, Ohio is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,759 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Xenia is located on the eastern edge of Cuyahoga Valley National Park and has a rich history dating back to when it was known as Xenia Heights. The name Xenia comes from an Indian word meaning "the place where everything grows." The first Europeans to visit Xenia were French traders in the late 17th century. They named the village after Jean Baptiste Xavier de La Salle because he had led an exploration of what would become Lake Erie in 1683. La Salle's expedition had passed through this area and he may have been inspired to name Xenia after this outpost on his trip because it was here that he found white men with bows and arrows shooting turkeys for sport. In 1807, James Kapp donated land to Xenia Township which became one of seventeen townships in Cuyahoga County. On July 1, 1825, Xenia Township united with Euclid Township to form what would be called Cuyahoga County Government District No. 2 (later renamed Kenton Township). Xena High School opened its doors in 1957 and remains one of the most popular schools in Xenia today!
