The Xenia, Ohio Coast Guard has been providing safety and security on the Great Lakes for over 120 years. The service is responsible for guarding against terrorism, piracy, and other maritime crimes. The Xenia Coast Guard was founded in 1887 as a part of the Ohio State Militia. The first Captain of the Coast Guard was George Hinkle. In 1933, the Coast Guard moved from its original location on the banks of the Cuyahoga River to its current location on East Market Street in Xenia. Today, the Coast Guard operates 164 patrol vessels with a complement of 3,000 personnel. Patrol boats are used to carry out search and rescue operations, traffic control duties, fisheries enforcement, and environmental protection responsibilities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also provides support to the Xenia Coast Guards through their Joint Terrorism Task Force program which aims to prevent terrorist attacks by organized groups along America's coasts. As it grew into an important commercial center during the 19th century, xenialofters began moving into Xenia to take advantage of its fertile land, water resources, and temperate climate. In 1868, John Fenton purchased land east of downtown from James Hennepin to form the nucleus of what would become today's city limits."
