Worthington was founded as a town on July 15, 1810 by commissioners from Youngstown and Steubenville. On February 14, 1814, it became a village when all of Medina County except for its easternmost corner were annexed to Toledo by an act of the General Assembly. That year also saw the founding of Athens (now Athens-Clarion) to the south and west of Worthington. In 1821, Worthington had 1,500 residents and became a city with a population over 25,000 due to new land purchases from Cleveland and other towns within Medina County. In 1903 it amalgamated with three other villages – Athens-Clarion (to the east), Bedford Heights (to the north), and North Olmsted (to the northwest). The merger created one large urban center that spanned six rural wards with a combined population totaling over 100,000 people during its peak years in size – more than any other US city before or since World War II. The Great Depression hit Worthington hard in 1930–1931 but did notonsequentially impact downtown business activity or social life which continued to be vibrant despite some difficult times; however there were many families who lost their homes during this time as well as some businesses going out of business because they could not compete against government subsidized prices for goods such as foodstuffs and gasoline during those difficult economic days.
