There are two centuries of maritime history in Worthington, Ohio. The area was first populated by the Chippewa Tribe of Indians, who built their village on the banks of the Miami River in 1795. The town was named after Captain John Worthington, a British explorer and naturalist who explored the Ohio Country in 1812-1813. In 1824, Worthington became a county seat and began to grow as a commercial center for shipping goods between Cleveland and other parts of the United States. In 1865, the city incorporated as a municipality under the name of Cincinnati. During World War II, Worthington played an important role as one of America's largest shipyards. After the war, many businesses closed but some continue to operate today such as Ameritrade Investments Inc., which is headquartered in downtown Worthington.
Worthington is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,959 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lucas County. Worthington was founded in 1824 by Colonel John Worthington and his wife Susannah Hill. The town was named after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's plantation in Georgia where Forrest had been born in 1785. In 1831, General Andrew Johnson visited Worthington and renamed it for him. The first post office in Worthington opened on July 1, 1824, under the name Warsaw; it closed on February 28, 1865 because of the Civil War. The first store opened in November 1825 in what is now the old high school building (now home to the University of Cincinnati). For a time, Worthington served as a center for trade with surrounding counties and townships as well as with Cincinnati. Worthington became an agricultural center during the early 19th century due to its location at an intersection of two major railroads: the Great Western Railroad and Miami Road (later known as US 41). There were also several large cotton plantations located around town that produced cotton until they were abandoned during World War II. After World War II ended, many manufacturing jobs moved out of town while others such as health care began to grow; however, overall job growth has not kept up with population growth since 2000. During most of its history there was only one store open each month; however, beginning with the late 1800s merchants started opening two or three stores per month so that people could have more variety items available at different prices points within their price range without having to go outside their price category all together which made shopping easier but also increased competition among retailers which then caused prices for goods to increase even further thereby reducing sales opportunities for those who could not afford higher priced items…the trend continued through into recent years until larger businesses took over from small businesses which led to limited access to affordable goods…. Today’s economy has shifted away from agriculture and towards servicessector growth fueled by technological advances such as online shopping……Today’s economic landscape challenges traditional notions about what constitutes “centrality†or “distance†within metropolitan areas….
