Worthington is a town in Richland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Worthington was founded in 1814 and named for Captain Job Worthington of the British navy. The first settler in what is now Worthington was Daniel Boone. In 1836, John Stephenson built a sawmill on the Cuyahoga River and established a community there called Stephensonville. The mill closed in 1886, but Stephensonville continued to exist as a small village until it merged with Worthington in 1951. Worthington was laid out on April 15, 1814 by Captain Job Worthington of HMS "Canterbury", which had anchored off the shore of present-day Cleveland while troops under General George Washington fought against Native Americans during the French and Indian War (1763- 1763). The town name is derived from its location at an intersection of two major waterways: the Cuyahoga River and the Beaver Creek. At its peak, Worthingon had a population of around 100 people and lay within walking distance of both downtown Cleveland and Cincinnati proper. However, due to land grants given to various members of parliament during Britain's emergence as a global power following their victory over France in 1781 – including Lord Dunmore – many residents fled northward after independence gained control over Great Britain that year. The opening days of what would become Worthington were quite prosperous for local farmers who managed to sell their produce throughout central Ohio and beyond; however, this prosperity slowly dissipated beginning around 1840 when market prices for goods began rising rapidly outside North America because transportation costs became increasingly prohibitively expensive withBURgeoning industrialization taking place across much of Europe at that time In 1851, when Amos Kendall purchased 666 acres (248 hectares) along Beaver Creek between his farmsteads Turtle Lake east of where today's Main Street meets Township Road 8 southwest thereof from James Hoadley - father-in-law to Senator Anthony Wayne - who also owned an adjacent piece adjoining Mr Hoadley’s tract - Kendall formed part of what would become known as "The Hill Country" area surrounding Akron stretching easterly from Beachwood past Medina west thence to Ridgefield northwest thereto lying athwart said Ridgefield aforesaid subjecting all same unto Township limits . That same year another group led by Dr J F Seward purchased 1/2 acre (0 hectares) just east side Main Street between Wadsworth Avenue N off Canalboat Road W near Long Branch creek thence northerly along Canalboat Road W northeast corner into Townshiplimits thereby forming one block or parcel with Mr Hoadley’s property annexed thereto according hereinbefore stated . Thereafter large numbers arrived seeking better surroundings being drawn by opportunities opened up by railroad accessibility especially those located south central Ohio having access not only commercial but residential areas soon followed making life here more comfortable although wages remained modest In 1870 work began on creating Route 66 which ran through Warwick County cutting through eastern Stark County finally terminating near Grove City just west of Little Miami University which has been home to students since 1865

The first post office was established here in 1803 by General James Wilkinson. In 1834, Worthington became a village when it merged with nearby Cardington Township to form the city limits today. Worthington has been home to many famous people such as baseball Hall-of-Famer Lou Gehrig and author Margaret Atwood since its incorporation as a village; she moved to Worthington from Toledo in 1951 after publishing her first novel there. Today's economy relies heavily on research and development at UC Cincinnati's School of Medicine which employs over 100 people including 40% women and 50% minorities within its workforce; also major employers include PNC Bank and American Express Company
