In 1911, the town passed an ordinance banning handguns and made it a crime to possess one without a license. This law was repealed in 1933. In 1934, the town passed an ordinance allowing handguns to be owned by those who had a license from the state of Ohio. The first gun purchases took place under this ordinance. After World War II, many people left Worthington for jobs in other towns and cities. Some of these people brought their firearms with them when they left, and others bought new guns during brief periods of time when there was more than one store open in town after each closure of another store due to prohibition laws. This period is sometimes called the “gun culture” era because gun ownership increased during this time. Worthington, Ohio is a small town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Beavercreek, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Worthington is located on the eastern edge of Dayton and is bordered by Beavercreek to the east, Middletown to the north, and Kettering to the west. The first settler in Worthington was James Worthington who arrived in 1796. He built a cabin near what is now State Route 975. After a few years he moved his family to a more permanent home and began trading goods with other settlers in what is now Beavercreek Township. In 1807 James Worthington married Mary Ann Cook and they started raising children here. They had six children: James (1808-1892), John (1810-1893), Anna (1812-1894), Gideon (1814-1901), Susanna (1816-1900) and Eliza Jane (1800-1789). The family operated a sawmill from their home until 1848 when it burned down due to an accident. In 1853 James Worthington erected a gristmill on Canfield Road which became known as “the old mill” because it still stands today. This mill processed flour from local mills into bricks and mortar for homes, businesses and government buildings throughout central Ohio until it closed its doors in 1969. James Worthington also owned land along Canfield Road which later became known as Highland Park Golf Course which hosted many tournaments over time including The Masters golf tournament played there in 1998 and 2009 among others In 1865 John Worthington married Sarah Elizabeth Knowles who came from Eaton County, Michigan with her parents buying some land here shepherding cows while living on horseback around that time .
