Worthington is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Dayton metropolitan area since 2001. The first settler in Worthington was Jonas Worthington in 1814. He and his family were among the first to land on what is now Worthington Township. In 1825, John Worthington organized a township and named it for his father Jonas. In 1846, Prophet Abraham Lincoln delivered an address in which he urged Americans to move westward into new territory that would be available for them if they could "build up this country." This idea of Manifest Destiny had taken root by this time and led to the founding of several towns along the Ohio River as well as other settlements around Cincinnati and Cleveland. One such group of pioneers was James Biddle who purchased 640 acres (246 ha) east of Dayton in what is now Lebanon Township on March 16, 1847. The town plat was drawn up on April 4 that year and named Dayton after James Biddle's home state of Vermont. On July 14, 1851, Dayton became the capital of Ohio when Governor Andrew Johnson made it the temporary seat of government while Columbus got its own city hall built nearby (the current structure replaced a pre-existing building). Dayton's growth continued during President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal years with businesses opening up throughout central Ohio; however World War II put a halt to those gains as industry shifted towards munitions production rather than technology or manufacturing. After the war ended in 1945, many jobs left downtown while others moved into suburbs closer to job opportunities outside of Dayton proper. In 1990s there were efforts underway to revive downtown but these have failed so far due to lack of interest from investors or tourism revenue from visitors who instead prefer Toonerville or Middletown over downtown because they offer more outdoor activities such as swimming pool and inline skating rink etc., respectively
