Small batch coffee history can be traced back to the early 1800s. Coffee beans were first grown and roasted in small, family-owned roasters. These small businesses often sourced their beans from local farmers and grew their own coffee plants. Over time, these small roasters developed a reputation for quality and consistency in their coffee products. As the industry grew more competitive, some of these smaller businesses began to open larger operations. At this point, the process of growing and roastng beans became more automated and standardized. This led to a decrease in the amount of hand-selected quality beans being produced by small businesses. As a result, many modern-daySmallBatchCoffee fanatics are descended from these earlier pioneers of the industry!
Small batch coffee history began with the first roastery, Second City Coffee in Manhattan. In this early days, small batches were brewed on a small scale and sold directly to customers. over time, as more and more people learned about and enjoyed small batch coffee, demand for these products grew. This lead to larger roasters such as Bialetti, Peet's Coffee Company, Paradox Coffee Roasters and many others starting up in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These businesses bought or leased smaller breweries that produced smaller quantities of coffee. Over time, these businesses developed their own unique styles of coffee that continue to be popular today.
