Wooster, Ohio is a small town in the unincorporated community of Wooster, Ohio, in Wayne County. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Cleveland metropolitan area. The first white people to settle in Wooster were George and Mary White on a farm that became known as "White's Hill." In 1800, James Fenton purchased land here and built a log cabin which he named Wooster House. In 1802, John Tuttle settled here and founded the village of Wooster. Tuttle's log cabin still stands today with its original door and window openings. In 1814, General David Wilkinson donated land to the village for its public square where citizens could gather for elections and discuss local issues. That same year, Wooster also gained township status from Muskingum Township. The first school in town was built on this site in 1816 by teacher Reverend Ebenezer Harmon (1781-1857). In 1821, Methodist Episcopal minister Amos Cox started teaching classes at his home until eventually opening a school on Main Street which continued until 1865 when it moved to what is now First United Methodist Church building downtown. In 1830, Captured Indian Chief Tecumseh visitedWooster while on his way to Detroit so residents decided that they should name their new post after him since he had been so important in their history. At his request one resident named William Muhlenberg took up the challenge and changed "Muhlenberg" to "Mooser" after he found an old map of Michigan with that same spelling of "moo." This provided some early clue about how much importance wooster would later hold as it marked not only the point where Tecumseh stopped but also what would become known as Muhlenbergsville after him! A group of men from nearby Dayton came along with Judge John Ewing who offered them $5 each if they could find a place for him to build a jail/prison inside Fort Wayne’s walls. They succeeded and erected what is now called Cuyahoga County Courthouse across from present day Erie Boulevard (now I-480) just east of downtown Wooster on property donated by Judge Ewing himself! Judge Ewing also donated land for schools – including one which still operates today – as well as churches and other buildings throughout central Ohio! The town was incorporated under the laws of New York State on November 3rd 1792 by vote of all citizens over 21 years old living within its limits! From then until 1933 when it lost its charter due to lack of population growth it functioned essentially as an unincorporated community patrolled by appointed officials appointed by New York City! On January 1st 1933 - because woosters had failed to meet statehood requirements laid out in section 5124(a) OF THE NEW YORK STATUTES - they received their own charter from the state legislature setting forth specific guidelines regarding tax rates (based upon taxable income), residency requirements (maximum 2 years without resided within municipality), power To levy taxes & make regulations therein etc., among others... These events left the town struggling to rebuild. By the early 1880s, however,Wooster had regained some of its former prosperity and had become one of Ohio's largest communities. By 1900, however,Wooster had lost most of its economic importance and its population had declined to around 50 people.
