Wilmington, Ohio is a city in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Delaware County by population and home to the University of Delaware. Wilmington is also the easternmost municipality in Greater Cleveland. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wilmington were French traders who sailed up the lower Great Lakes in 1624 and 1627. They named it "Illinois" because they found a Illinois cornfield on their trip. Englishman George Monck came through that year with his army and called it "New Castle." On October 26, 1795, James Krieger founded Krieger Township when he donated two hundred acres (10 km2) along Scioto River between Portsmouth and Newark to be a township townships’ divisional point for umpires drawn from among his own players at ball games held in those townships; these umpires would officiate as referees over all other civil transactions within those townships In 1814, Daniel Webster bought land at what is now downtown Wilmington from John Nixon for $5 per acre (0·24 ha). In 1821, Webster became one of four public trustees who ruled over Wilmington while Great Britain was still part of its empire.
