The first white settler in Wilmington was James Mifflin who purchased land from the Lenape people on December 12, 1800. In 1814, Major General George Washington visited Wilmington and ordered Major General David Wilkinson to build him a fortification to protect against future French threats located upstream on what is now Canfield Heights Road NE (now I-670). In 1816 Delaware County became state of Ohio and Wilmington became its capital. On October 15 of that year, President James Ketchum signed legislation providing for religious freedom for all citizens of Ohio including those living in Indian Country where religion was still considered a taboo subject by many Indians. This event helped lead to increased trade between Europeans and American Indians which created new opportunities for businesses in Wilmington such as clothing stores, breweries, lumber yards and meatpacking plants as well as increasing support for local education through schools such as Stuyvesant High School which opened its doors on September 1st,, 1827
