The United States Army was founded in 1775, and its first Regiment was organized in the city of Wilmington, Ohio on December 12th of that year. The first unit to serve in the Continental Army was Company F of the 2nd Regiment of Foot, which served under Colonel George Washington during the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1802, the 1st Infantry Regiment was raised in Wilmington and served until 1812 when it disbanded due to its disbanding after only 8 months service. The following year, Company G of the 1st Infantry Regiment from Delaware County volunteered for military service and served as an infantry regiment throughout the Mexican-American War before disbanding in 1848. In 1861, a new regiment called “the 5th Cavalry” was organized at Newark and deployed to Kentucky where it fought against Confederate forces. After returning home, it dispersed itself among various states before being resurrected at Camp Chase near Dayton Ohio on November 15th 1862 as Companies A & B of misleadingly named Brigade H (5th) Cavalry Corps with LtCol George Armstrong Custer serving as brigade commander. This brigade became part of Robert E Lee’s army during his Invasion Of Kentucky but withdrew prior to battle on December 12th when Union forces under Ulysses S Grant came overlanded into their territory unopposed. After Lincoln’s inauguration on March 4th 1865, GeneralUlyssesS Grant ordered his army across Tennessee River into northern Virginia where he encountered Confederate forces commanded by General Robert E Lee who had retreated towards Petersburg. On December 13th 1863 after days fights resulting in heavy losses for both sides including around 100% casualties for Confederates hand-to-hand combat while Union troops managed to get within striking distance they finally broke through Confederate lines resulting in a decisive victory at Appomattox Court House which effectively ended The American Civil War.

In 1920, General Pershing reopened the camp with new barracks, a officers' mess, a rifle range, artillery range, bandstands and playgrounds for children during peacetime while also maintaining wartime readiness by providing instruction in various armaments including machine guns, artillery pieces and tanks. In 1933-1934 during Franklin D Roosevelt’s term as president there were several expansions to army post camps throughout America due to advances in technology such as air conditioning which made living conditions at army post camps more comfortable for troops and their families which led to increased demand for available posts within states bordering on Ohio including Delaware County adjoining Cleveland – home of Cleveland Municipal Hospital – making Wilmington an ideal location for expansion of army postCamp Butler into what is now Delaware County adjacent to Cleveland Municipal Hospital
Wilmington is a city in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Delaware County. Wilmington was founded as a post office on March 3, 1811, by Captain David Wilkinson and his wife Judith. The first settler in Wilmington was John Withers who arrived in 1798. The original town site was located just east of what is now downtown Wilmington and across from the current Municipal Building. Afterward many people moved out of town because they were fearful for their safety following such events; however, others chose to stay because they could not support life without liquor sales."
