Wilmington was home to the Third Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry, part of the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was deployed in 1861 and 1862 to fight in the Western Theater. In 1863, the regiment was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other units. In 1865, Wilmington became the seat of government for Delaware County. The city's population increased as a result and it began to develop into a major commercial center. In 1868, Wilmington hosted the first modern world fair and attracted more than 200,000 visitors. In 1865, Wilmington became home to General Philip Sheridan's cavalry division after it was detached from General Ulysses S. Grant's army at Cairo, Illinois. Sheridan used Wilmington as his headquarters during his campaign against Confederate general Robert E. Lee in Virginia (1865-1867). Afterward, he moved his command to nearby Petersburg before returning to Wilmington in 1869. In 1870-71, Wilmington hosted an annual exposition called "The World's Fair." It featured exhibits from around the world and drew more than two million visitors. In 1872-73, it also served as temporary capital of Delaware County while Watertown developed closer to centerville for government operations that year due to construction projects on Rte 9W which cut through Center Township then crossed Delaware Creek into Centerville proper That same year saw significant growth within Centerville itself when Powell & Sons opened their store on Broad Street close by what is now Centerville High School After Watertown lost its status as a town in 1874 due to lack of business opportunity or population growth within its borders (Centerville had outgrown its capacity), much of what remained of Watertown between Centerville Road east and Center Street became Centerville Hundred
Wilmington is a city in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth most populous municipality in Delaware County and the largest city by population within the Greater Cleveland area. Wilmington has been called "The Fertile Crescent of America" for its significant agricultural production. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wilmington were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on their ship La Nave in 1524. They stopped at what is now Portsmouth on their way up the Scioto River and named it Tarentum because of the abundant seafood they saw there. The next year, in 1527, Giovanni da Verrazzano explored present-day Delaware County while sailing downriver from Toledo on his flagship caravel San Marco. He named a portion of that county after his home town of Verrazzano (Verraziano). By 1614 English colonists had settled along the Scioto River and founded Newark, then known as Wyandotte Landing because of its location near Wyandotte Lake (now part of Cleveland). In 1694 Dutch settlers arrived at Zanesville opposite present-day Painesville following a military expedition commanded by General Monmouth against Chief Tecumseh. That same year English colonists from Rhode Island began settling at New Castle just east of Wilmington when they reached Safety Harbor on the Muskingum River. By 1715 all these settlements were located around what are now downtown Wilmington and Riverside Street running north-south through them served as their main artery connecting them together. In 1795 American Revolutionary War veteran James Ketchum established Ketchum's Mills which became one of America's leading textile manufacturers with factories located throughout central Ohio until World War II; he also donated land to become an innercity park today known as Ketchum Park adjacent to downtown Wilmington including parts of Riverside Drive between 4th Street/Ohio Avenue north and 5th Street south stretching eastward from I-4805 exit 507 southwest to 8th Street/Route 422 westbound) In 1802 Reverend John Richardson erected Richman's Presbyterian Church which remains one of Wilmington’s major landmarks today A few years later David Denny built Denny’s Brewery which became one of America’s leading beer brewers before becoming presidentially majority owner ( drank) - Brownsville Brewing Company Inc., headquartered in nearby Ashtabula
The history of the military deployed gift is a long and varied one. Wilmington, Ohio first became a community in 1814 when three brothers, James, John and Nicholas Wilmington, founded the town on the Scioto River. The town was named after their father-in-law Sir George Wilkinson who had bought land adjacent to the river. The name Wilmington was anglicized to Wilmington in 1825. The population of Wilmington grew from about 100 in 1830 to over 2,000 by 1850. In 1853, the Delaware and Ohio Railroad was built through Wilmington and it soon became an important transportation hub for goods traveling between Cincinnati and Cleveland. This growth led to a number of businesses opening up in downtown Wilmington including clothing stores, grocery stores, hotels and breweries. By 1860, the city had reached its current size with over 12 thousand residents. Over time, however, many businesses closed or moved out of town as technological advancements made life much easier for people living elsewhere during World War II. Today there are only a few remaining buildings from early days of Wilmington’s existence such as the old State Library which is now used as a museum. Despite this; Wilmington has managed to maintain its vibrant culture and economy throughout these years which makes it one of Ohio’s most interesting communities today.
Wilmington was founded in 1795 as the temporary capital of the Northwest Territory. In 1801, it became the permanent capital of Ohio. The city is named for General George Washington, who resided there during his first term as president.
