Willowick is a city in Hancock County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County and home to the Willowick Municipal Airport. The first European settler in what is now Willowick was James Hargrave in 1813. He founded a gristmill on the Scioto River, which he named "Hancock Mill". In 1815, Hargrave's son John erected a log cabin next to his mill and started trading with Indians. In 1818, Joshua Humphrey settled in what is now Willowick after traveling from Youngstown. Humphrey built a sawmill on the Scioto River and became one of its largest investors. He also donated land for a public school and chapel near his mill. In 1830, Timothy Garton purchased some of Humphrey's land and started growing corn there until 1840 when he sold it to George Stephenson for $10 per acre. In 1842, Stephenson donated part of his estate (now known as Garton Heights) to Willowick Township for use as a township center. The town hall was constructed here in 1865 by local contractor Lewis Mumford using proceeds from his successful sale of country-printed paper products called "Mumford Paper". On July 1, 1870, Willoughby Township merged into Hancock County; however, much of village remained within Willowick Township until 1991 when all but one block within the old township were annexed into Hancock County proper

Willowick was founded in 1792 by General George Washington and is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The town competed for years with Dayton, Ohio, as the regional capital of Ohio. In 1801, Willowick was chosen as the new capital of Ohio after Toledo became an independent city. The city was renamed Cleveland in 1836 due to its proximity to both Cleveland and Detroit, Michigan. In 1964, Willowick was merged into the larger city of Cleveland.
On July 4, 1814, the first permanent settler in what would become Willowick, Ohio, was Abram Halsey. He and his family arrived from Connecticut on a ship called The Dolphin. The town was founded around this time by Nicholas Weiser and others who were looking for a location to establish their new farmstead after the loss of land in Indiana due to the American Civil War. The population of Willowick grew quickly as people flocked to its vicinity foresteading opportunities. By 1830, there were over 50 residents living in the small town. In 1835, William Linton purchased 2 acres of land north of the village for $100. This purchase marked the beginning of Willowick's growth as a center for commerce and culture. In 1850, two families bought 640 acres northwest of Willowick for $10 per acre; this set off an agricultural boom that continued until World War II when most of the farmland was taken over by industry. During this time period, Willowick also achieved notoriety as a place where factories made munitions and other materials needed for war production. By 1960, only 10 percent of originalresidential property remained within the walls of the old town limits while 95 percent had been subdivided into housing tracts or developments outside the boundary lines which remain today
