Willowick is a small, Midwestern town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Summit County. Willowick is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Willowick was founded in 1824 by fur traders from Canada after they found a large piece of land in what is now Ohio that had been claimed by both Great Britain and France. The first settler in Willowick was George Washington Smith and his family who arrived from Massachusetts on October 3, 1824. In 1830, John Hockaday purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land adjacent to present-day Willowick from Nicholas Tarbell for $1 per acre ($10 million today). The town was named for General James Willoughby (1786–1857), an American general who served in the Mexican War and as military governor of Vera Cruz Province before being elected as a Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war in 1852. A post office called Willoughby was established in 1827, but it wasn't until 1840 that a building became available for use as a post office. The first postmaster was Nicholas Tarbell Sr.. In 1865, John Daugherty organized the local grain elevator business which soon became one of Summit County's largest employers; it still exists today as Daugherty Elevator Company LLC.. In 1898, agriculturalist Prentice Amish began growing corn on his farm south of town; this led to development around Amishtown which includes several stores and restaurants since the early 2000s when Main Street has been renamed Center Street following Pioneer Days events each year on July 4th & 5th UTC/. In 1906, William Jennings Bryan won the presidential election with 56% of the vote against incumbent Grover Cleveland’s 44%. Willowick is a town in Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Willowick was founded in 1810 by John Crouch and his family. The first settler to come to Willowick was John Crouch, who came with his brothers George and Michael in 1810. He built a log cabin on the present site of the town on Delaware Creek. In 1812, he married Sarah Smith and they started to cultivate land around their cabin. In 1814, they bought some more land from Moses Chilton and started to build a house thereon. They named their new home "Willowick". In 1816-17, the Crouch brothers sold additional land south of where they lived for $2 per acre (1¢ per foot). This provided enough money to buy another log cabin which they used as their new home until 1830 when they moved out of Willowick into an earlier frame building that still stands today on Delaware Drive near its original intersection with High Street. The frame building served as the town hall until it burned down in 1907; however, a replica of this structure was rebuilt in2004-2005 using local stone blocks and mortar . From 1830 until 1890 when the county seat moved from Middletown to Athensville (and then back again), Willowick remained unincorporated because its citizens were too busy farming or trading goods with other towns within Athens County for sale or transportation across county lines during those years.(Foley) After becoming an incorporated town in 1890(Crouse), residents voted not to annex any other settlements within Athens County because “we felt our growth would be slow if we shared resources with othersâ€.(Foley) A separate post office operated at Willowick from 1889 until 1902; however it closed due to lack of mail service after only six months due to continuing wagon trains arriving through Middletown laden with cargo bound for larger cities like Toledo instead.(Greene) By 1907 only one small farmstead stood within what is now WillowICK while neighboring villages had all annexed into Athens County:(Dmeyer) However despite these challenges early settlers continued development such as building roads/ bridges/a jail/schoolhouse etc., making it one of America's most developed rural communities before large urban busts like those experienced by other rural areas throughout America starting around 1900 led farmers into suburban living pattern characterized by large tract homes (and later subdivisions) surrounded by productive farmland.–(Wikipedia article About Willwickck)
