The town was founded in 1812 by settlers from Connecticut. Willowick was one of the original towns in Muskingum County. The first post office was established in 1815 and the first store opened in 1817. In 1824, Willowick became a village and had its own school district. On February 14, 1829, Willowick had its first courthouse constructed and on November 15, 1830, it became a town. In 1897, Willy Wick Manufacturing Company (founded by Augustus Wick) began making radios and televisions here in Willowick. This company ceased operations in 2003 but left behind a legacy of manufacturing quality TVs and radios that continue to be produced today by various companies including Radio Shack and Dayton's Electronics Corporation
The town of Willowick, Ohio was founded in 1795 by Nicholas H. Willoughby and his family. The first settler in the area was Daniel Williams, who built a log cabin on the banks of the River Muskingum. The town grew rapidly, and by 1800 there were over eighty people living in Willowick. In 1814, a gristmill was built near the present day intersection of Elm and Star streets, and soon after other mills began to be erected in the town. By 1830, Willowick had a schoolhouse and two churches. In 1836, WILLOUGHBY & CO., merchants who lived in Cincinnati], started a store here that continued until 1889. In 1838-39, WILLOUGHBY set up an sawmill at the site of present day Elm Street and Maple Street; this mill produced paper for local newspapers until it closed in 1865. The population of Willowick reached 1,200 by 1860; but due to increased transportation costs caused by railroad construction throughout much of America during that period (the early days of railroads were very expensive), its growth slowed significantly during the next decade. In 1870-71 WILLOUGHBY founded another store here - THE WOODY HILL STORE - which became one of the most popular shopping destinations in downtown Cincinnati]. During this time also came about some changes within the community as women gained more access to education and families started moving away from rural areas into larger towns closer to work opportunities. Beginning around 1880-81 some small businesses opened up within walking distance of each other - these included B & O Bakery (later known as King's Coffee), Mrs Fenton's Furniture Store (later known as specialize', J&R Hardware), etc.; these businesses provided retail service to residents for basic needs such as groceries, clothing, hardware items/paintball games etc.. However between 1890-1900 most Willowick residents still depended largely on agriculture for their sustenance]'. In 1902 WILLOWICK'S FIRST SCHOOL WAS BUILT ON THE SITE OF THE PRESENT DAY Elm Street And MapleStreet; this school served inner city students until 1957 when it was replaced by US High School [now White Castle Academy]. Although commercial development gradually resumed throughout much of Cincinnati towards the end of World War II ([1945]),Willowick slowly lost its status as an important commercial center due to factors such as population growths outside its boundaries]'. By 1970 only about fifty people remained living in Willowick while Over 100 businesses operated within blocks radius]; however beginning with 1971-72 efforts were madeto revivecommercial activity through various means including developmentof new industrial parks adjacent thereto], revivalof downtown business districts], establishmentof special purpose districts]'.
