The name of Willowick comes from the Willa tree that grows in its area. The first settler in Willowick was David Wilcox and his family who came to this location in 1812. Willowick was platted as a village by James Swayze in 1827. Willowick experienced some growth during World War II due to the influx of soldiers and their families which made it one of the most heavily bombed areas of America. During the war, many businesses were destroyed or closed down but overall Willowick bounced back and became an active community again. In recent years, Willowick has seen an increase in development with new homes being built along with several new businesses including a grocery store, barber shop, doctor's office, post office and restaurant all within walking distance of each other. A number of local organizations have been formed around town such as the Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Business Association which offer programming for children and youth as well as adult events such as Fourth Of July fireworks shows and bike races. Willowick is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Willowick was founded by Abram Willoughby and his brother John in 1814. In 1830, it became a trading post between Fort Pitt and Erie on the Great Lakes. By 1840, Willowick had a population of 900 people. In 1868, Willowick became the seat of Columbiana County when that area was divided into two counties--Columbiana and Sandusky. The village continued to be governed by a board of trustees until 1907 when it passed under state authority as an unincorporated community within Columbiana County. In 1870, Abram Willoughby donated land to build the first high school in what would become Willowick Township. The school was destroyed by fire on October 12, 1906 and new construction began on November 15th with classes starting for students on December 3rd. A second high school building opened in 1916 and served as Columbiana High School until its closure in 1970; it now houses the library system's archives department. The township trustees also developed plans for a large shopping center which never came to fruition due to opposition from local businesses over zoning changes proposed by county officials during the late 1960s/early 1970s The original small community near where I live used to have fields full of corn but they've been turned into gravel roads because our township doesn't have enough money to fix up streets like they should The last time we had any services like water or lights were back in 1957 so here we are again with all these issues
