Willoughby, Ohio is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to Willoughby were traders and missionaries from France in the early 17th century. The area that became Willoughby was first settled by Quakers in the late 18th century. In 1825, John Smedley founded the town of Willoughby on land he purchased from the government of Michigan Territory. In 1863, after the American Civil War ended, General Ulysses S. Grant moved his headquarters from Cairo, Illinois to Willoughby and pronounced it "the new Athens." He named it for General George Washington's old home near Mount Vernon in Virginia. At that time Athens was one of several cities in eastern Ohio with populations over 100 people; Grant chose Willoughby because its location – just north of Akron – made it convenient for him to move around and visit army campaigns during the war. In 1903, WMSD (then WTOL) began broadcasting from studios located east of downtown Akron across a dirt road called Mount Vernon Avenue into which Summit Road had been cut as part of an important electric grid expansion project authorized by President Theodore Roosevelt while he was president. That same year saw construction begin on what would become one of Akron's most famous landmarks: Warren Park (now University Park) Boulevard between Third and Fourth Streets NW.). This busy intersection would later be renamed Montgomery Boulevard after another local hero - National Football League playerapser Johnny Unitas - when he moved to Akron from Detroit in 1947. Willoughby's history can be traced back to 1796 when Captain John Fetterman and his family settled on the site of present day Willoughby Township. The township was organized in 1814 and named for General Richard Yates who served as a major general during the American Revolution. In 1868, WILLOUGHBY TOWNSHIP VILLAGE WAS INCOPRIATE WITH THE COUNTY OF HURON AND FORMED A PART OF THAT COUNTY. WILLOUGHBY TOWNHOOD WENT INTO CANCELLATION IN 1951 AND HAS NOT BEEN REVISITED SINCE THEN. WILLOUGHBY IS ONE OF THE LAST AMERICAN CITIES TO RECEIVE A PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM; THIS WAS DONE IN 1946 WHEN WILLOUGHBY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT WAS CREATED OUT OF PERTINENT PARTS OF TWO OTHER CITIES; CLEVELAND AND MICHIGAN CITY. WILLOUGHBY IS ALSO HOME TO CLEVELAND METROPOLITAN LIGHT RAILROAD'S ALPINE VALLEY LINE; THIS LINE SERVES AS A SERVICE LINK BETWEEN CLEVELAND AND MICHIGAN CITY THRU ZIONSVILLE. The first settler in what is now Willoughby Township was Captain John Fetterman who arrived from Connecticut on October 8, 1796 with his family. Captain Fetterman founded a log cabin community called "Fetterstown" on what is now West Side Road near today's intersection of Maple and Wright Streets in Willoughby Township (now part of Akron). For many years after Captain Fetterman's arrival, taverns were popular places where men would stop for refreshment while they traveled or worked nearby. In 1814, following Ohio's admission into Confederation as a new nation, General Richard Yates ordered all Revolutionary War veterans to vacate their homes and move westward into new territory that became Ohio under George Washington’s rule as Commander in Chief of all America’s soldiers serving abroad - this area included much of central Indiana including present day Toledo and other areas east of Cincinnati so that these veterans could find new homes without fear of British retribution or seizure by warrants issued by British military commanders back home... This order led to the founding of the Townships which were created based on land grants given out by George Washington to veteran friends/family members... One important reason why certain areas withinpresent day Huron County became townships was because valuable agricultural land lying within easy reach offered exceptional prices for purchase due to its lack of development over time... Most importantly however it was during this time period when residents began…………………..
Willoughby, Ohio was founded by the Scioto Company in 1788. The company built a mill on the current site of Willoughby High School in 1801 and commenced operations. In 1814, the company built a new mill on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River. The mill continued to be operated until 1924.
