Willoughby is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Willoughby is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Willoughby was James Fenton who arrived on July 6, 1813. He and his family built a log cabin on the east branch of the Muskingum River. Just one year later, he and his wife Anna built a larger cabin on the west branch of the river. In 1814, they had their second child and named him John Fenton after their father’s older brother (John also served as sheriff). William Hogg, an early settler in what would become Willoughby Township married Anna Fenton in 1815 and together they founded a small farming village called Hoggstown just south of present day Willoughby. In 1816-17 George Stephenson built the first public road through Muskingum County from Cuyahoga Falls to Akronites were finally able to travel away from poverty stricken rural areas into large city lives with easy access to work opportunities thanks to this new transportation infrastructure which started life as a horse-drawn wagon track

Willoughby was founded by Germans in 1784 and named after the village of Wiltzingen in Bavaria. The first post office opened in 1868. The town grew up around manufacturing and agriculture, but has since become an important cultural center for the Greater Dayton Area. Willoughby has two high schools: Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) and Scioto Valley Community College (SCVC). OLGC offers a full range of undergraduate degrees including arts, sciences, law enforcement and business administration; while SCVC offers associate degrees in arts, sciences, engineering and education as well as vocational training programs for businesses and professionals. In addition to its two high schools there are also three primary schools: Bible School House/Lighthouse Hill Elementary School; Pioneerland Middle School; and WILLIAMSON Park Elementary School which serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
