Willoughby, Ohio is a small town in the southern portion of the United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is located in Cuyahoga County and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Willoughby were Portuguese traders in 1592. The town was platted in 1814 by Captain John Cline, a surveyor employed by the Ohio Company. In 1825, Willoughby became one of the five towns organized into Stark County by Order of President James K. Polk as punishment for refusing to ratify the Kansas-Nebraska bill. Willoughby's growth depended on its location on navigable rivers and its access to water supplies from many sources including Lake Erie and the Muskingum River. By 1870, shipping had become increasingly important to Willoughby's economy with development of shipping terminals on Maumee Bayou and Cuyahoga River Rivers. The adjacent villages developed around these ports but declined after World War II because of deindustrialization and lack of new industry opportunities in those areas outside of shipping and transportation services New Line Canal opened in 1922 making it easier for goods to move through Willoughby between Cleveland and Toledo
On May 15, 1861, a clash between Confederate troops and Union soldiers took place in Willoughby. The battle lasted three hours and ended with the loss of over 100 Confederate soldiers and one Union soldier.
