The Willoughby Volunteer Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on December 12, 1861, at Camp Chase near Cincinnati, Ohio and mustered in on January 3, 1862. The regiment participated in the battle of Second Bull Run as part of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, IX Corps under General Ulysses S. Grant. He later became Commanding General of I Corps and led that division throughout the war. The regiment lost a total of 246 men killed or mortally wounded during service; however, it also lost one man to disease for every five men killed or mortally wounded. The Willoughby Volunteer Infantry Regiment is best known for its participation in the Battle of Gettysburg where it played a significant role in defending against Confederate forces attacking from three directions. After being relieved by other units at Cemetery Hill on July 2, 1863, the regiment moved north to help stave off an impending Confederate attack on Yorktown Heights which would have resulted in serious strategic consequences for Grant’s army and ultimate victory over Confederates four days later. At Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 following Union capitulation all military units were disbanded except those still serving with individual unit commanders as ordered by President Abraham Lincoln
