Dahlgren in 1824 and has had a military presence since the Revolutionary War. It was during World War II that Wickliffe became known as the “city of ships” because of its many naval vessels stationed in and around town. The first ship to be commissioned into the United States Naval Reserve was USS Constitution on July 20, 1908. Wickliffe, Ohio is a small town in the Unsinkable Valley area of Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Wickliffe is located on the west bank of the unincorporated community of Wickliffe Creek. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Wickliffe were French traders and missionaries who landed there in 1796. They built Fort Necessity on what is now Wickliffe Creek after learning about a deep water harbor east of present-day Wickliffe. In 1802, Ulysses S. Grant sent an expedition to explore this new location and found that it was empty; he named the post for General George Washington, who had once visited America's then-new colonies in North America. Wickliffe Creek was named for Captain James Wilkinson (1759-1824), an American Revolutionary War hero who served as a Marine commander during the Battle of Bunker Hill and later became Governor of Rhode Island before dying at sea while searching for HMS " Actions ". After Wilkinson's death, his family donated land along its banks to form what is today Wickliffe Township. In 1814, Isaac Brock founded Brockton College in nearby Brockton Heights after being inspired by John Adams' pamphlet "Commentaries on several Cases in Great Britain". In 1898, WKU Broadcasting Corporation moved from Rochester to Winkler and changed its name to WTAM-FM; it has beenowned by Cumulus Media since 2006. The first post office opened at Wicklow in 1821; it closed in 1865 because mail didn't arrive regularly fromwichlow until 1896 when WTAM began carrying local mail service between Akron and Cleveland serving both cities as well as neighboring towns including South Euclid and West Bloomfield until 1966 when that service was discontinued due to budget constraints with all other mail services automated statewide by 1978). In 1916, Stroudsburg Steel Works opened nearby providing employment for many locals during World War I which led to increased development around town; current day businesses include steel fabrication plants (Stroudsburg Steel Works closed in 1998) , shipyards (WKU Broadcasting Corporation closed down their operations there after 50 years), auto parts distributorship (still ongoing today) . Wickliffe was a small town in the southern part of Ohio, United States until the early 1800s. The town was founded by John Wickliffe and his family in 1792. It was located on the Miami and Erie Canal. Wickliffe had a Methodist church, a school, and a post office. The town declined after it lost its canal access and saw only sporadic growth until the arrival of the railroad in 1853. The railroad changed everything, as it made Wickliffe one of the largest towns in Ohio. At first it benefited from its new location: it became an important transportation hub for goods arriving from all over the Midwest. However, by 1870 Wickliffe had become an agricultural center with only 2 percent of its population manufacturing anything other than food items such as cloth or paper products. Nevertheless, Wickliffe kept up its role as an industrial center throughout most of the 20th century thanks to its investments in aluminum processing plants and other heavy industry clusters like them across central Ohio.
