In 1907wicklowe incorporated as a town under the terms of an act passed by the Ohio General Assembly that year based on recommendations from a local group known as the Committee for Civic Renewal which had been formed to improve civic conditions in towns within Cuyahoga County during its heyday of growth before World War I%. The community of Wickliffe was founded in 1812 by John Wickliffe and his family as a small post office on the Wabash River near modern-day Cincinnati. It became a village in 1901 and an incorporated town in 1907. The name "Wickliffe" is derived from the Wyandot word cha-winni meaning "a place where game can be hunted." In 1838, John Wickcliffe erected a mill on the Scioto River to produce flour for local markets. This early flour mill remains operational today as the Wickcliffe Mill Museum. In 1853, George Hays built himself a sawmill on what is now Elmira Creek south of Wickliffe.reef water which he named after his mother's maiden name (Ferguson). By 1860, Hays had two other mills located within 1 mile of each other; one on Elmira Creek and one on Scioto River. By 1870 there were six mills operating in Butler County. In 1892–93, part of Cleveland's largest fire destroyed most of downtown Cleveland but did not damage or destroy any buildings within blocks of City Hall where Mayor James Kapp made his famous speech denouncing Tammany Hall corruption that year also known as "the Fire That Burning".
