In 1814, Wickliffe became one of several towns in Ohio to secede from Virginia because they did not approved of British rule there. In later years, Wickliffe also played a significant role in the development of high technology and modern medicine. For example, scientists at University College Hospital based their work there on patient specimens taken from Wickcliffe residents during World War I. Wickliffe was founded in 1792 by Joshua Wickliffe and his wife Mercy. The town was named for Colonel John Wickliffe, who had donated land to the Town of Wickliffe in 1781. The first post office was established in 1802, and the first store opened in 1805. In 1814, Wickliffe became a village and the name changed to Wadsworth. On July 15, 1824, Wadsworth incorporated as a city with a population of 350 people. On November 3, 1830, Wadsworth lost its charter and became a townsite again. It rejoined the city limits on December 1, 1890.
