Whitehall, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 3,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–The Muncie–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Scioto River and bordered by Delaware County to the east and northwest, Ross Township to the north,cumulus Township to the northeast and southwest, and Butler Township to the southeast. According to 2000 census data, Whitehall has an area of 0.5 square miles (1 km²). The first settler in Whitehall was James Henshaw who built a cabin on what is now State Route 6 in 1811. A post office called Whitehall was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1866. In 1814-1815 Daniel Woodruff settled near Mud Lake which he named after his mother's maiden name: Mudford or Moedocka Hill woodruffiana (now McIntyre). He also erected a log cabin on what is now State Route 66 about one mile south of present day Whitehall village limits where he met his future wife Anna Maria Henshaw; they married on July 3, 1816 at Oneida Creek Methodist Church just east of present day US Highway 441/State Route 66 junction. In 1830 Joseph Crouse started a gristmill here that became known as "Crouse's Mill" because its owner John Crouse Sr., son of Joseph Crouse II operated it until 1893 when it passed into ownership by Ewing Coal & Coke Company parent company Mellon Iron Works Ltd.. The city of Whitehall, Ohio is located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Ohio and was founded in 1811 by a group of Englishmen who had migrated to that area during the Indiana Territory’s early years. The town site was chosen because it wasadjacent to an important creek and because nearby land had been offered for sale as part of a gift from the British Crown. The original settlers were primarily Quakers, but over time they grew to include other Protestant denominations as well. By 1821, Whitehall had a population of about 150 people and functioned as a small village until it became a full-fledged town in 1827. Whitehall rapidly developed into an important transportation stop on the Great Lakes region due to its location near two major waterways – the Muskingum River & Lake Erie. It also became known for its agricultural production, which included corn, beans, wheat, potatoes, onions, etc. In addition to its role as an economic center, Whitehall also hosted several notable events during its history: first being designated as the capital of Northwest Ohio by then- governor James Kahl in 1861; hosting both the Cleveland-Akron International Fair in 1875 & 1886; & serving as ++the temporary home while Ross County was created within Northwest Ohio on December 12th (then called Clermont Township) after General David Dixon resigned his appointment as President pro tempore of that county following his nomination for office at what would become soon known as The Cincinnati Convention(1868). Although Whitehall experienced some significant growth throughout its centuries-long existence – including becoming one of the first towns to be incorporated within Summit County – it tragically lost much moisture content and severely malfunctioned during both World War I & II due to lack thereof; this eventually resulting in numerous buildings collapsing or receiving extensive damage (& loss) from war efforts. Despite these setbacks however, many residents continue to reside here today& ++many businesses have continued operations despite harsh weather conditions recently (-10°F/-22°C recent past average).
