Whitehall is a town in Adams County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first settler in Whitehall was John Sayer in 1814. He and his brother James founded the village of Whitehall on the Scioto River about four miles (6 km) southeast of present-day Columbus. In 1826, Whitehall became a town under the name of "Newburgh". Newburgh was abandoned in 1829 by its original settlers because of economic problems caused by Indian raids near their community. In 1830, Whitehall became part of the new State of Ohio and lost its township status; however, it continued to use the name "Newburgh". In 1836, Newburgh was renamed "Whitehall" after General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. In 1840–41, John Prentice built a sawmill on what is now North High Street in Whitehall and began operations. The mill helped create an early industry in Whitehall and supported local families for over 50 years until it went out of business around 1960. These gifts are typically made out of custom-made materials such as leather or metal that is specific to the soldier or marine receiving it. Some marines even receive personalized pistols as their Christmas present. The Marine Corps’ gift history is also reflective of how it feels about its servicemen and women who fight under its banner around the world. In 1812, Whitehall was founded by Colonel George Washington as a trading post on the Scioto River. The town grew rapidly and in 1824, it became the home of the U.S. legation to Great Britain. In 1828, Whitehall became part of Ohio and in 1830, the capital of that state was moved from Cincinnati to Whitehall. Whitehall experienced a period of prosperity during the late 19th century due to its location at the confluence of various rivers and its access to transportation networks. However, this prosperity eventually faded as pollution from manufacturing plants increased and population growth outpaced economic development. Since white settlement in Ohio began in 1795, many aspects of its history have been affected by interactions with Native Americans and other settlers who populated what is now Ohio over time. One such interaction was land ownership; prior to 1800, most inhabitants lived on or near water bodies which allowed them little control over their surroundings or exploitation by others. This led to confrontations between natives and early colonists as disputes over resources (e.g., hunting rights) arose frequently. As white settlement spread into new territory, conflicts with native groups also multiplied; these encounters often resulted in warfare that devastated communities and killed large numbers of people. In addition to military actions against indigenous peoples, colonists also engaged in hostile behavior toward local tribes that they considered responsible for natural disasters (e.g., flooding), lost crops, illness or death among their livestock or people (e.g., uprising among tribal members), or simply interfered with trade activities outright – all acts that could lead to punitive measures by colonial authorities seeking retribution for grievances suffered
