In 1814, Whitehall became the capitol of the new State of Ohio and remained so until 1827. When Ohio became a state in 1803, Whitehall became its capital again but it lost its role as the seat of government to Cincinnati in that year. Whitehall is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cuyahoga Falls-Miamisburg, OH-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent white settler in Whitehall was Nicholas Soo who arrived in 1792 and built a cabin on the same spot where he now lives. Soo's son John also lived there for a time before moving to Cleveland. By 1814 white settlers had established cabins and platted the town around what is now Main Street. In 1827 sawing logs were used to build a schoolhouse which served as Union High School until it closed in 1907. In 1857, two years after Ohio became an Indiana Territory, Whitehall passed from Indiana to Ohio as part of that state's admission into the Union. At this time most of its residents came from Clinton Township in Stark County so many buildings still remain from that period including Butler House (later known as Academy Hall), Store House No 3 and Presbyterian Church which stand today on Court Street between Green and Second Streets. A new courthouse was built by order of President James K. Polk along with other buildings including the jail and post office in 1886 additions to what is currently State Road 421 north of downtown Whitehall; these structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings near Cleveland . The courthouse burned down in 1925 but was replaced by what is presently First Baptist Church on Market Street just east of I-71 exit 219B when that section opened up for traffic in 1965 In 1978 voters approved raising taxes by $1 per capita to fund public schools while keeping rates frozen at their 1979 level; this measure increased property values among those living within 2 miles (3 km) of Akron city limits making Whitehall one of wealthiest townships within Greater Akron .
