Whitehall is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,677 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Whitehall Township was James Peele and his family who arrived in 1811. The name of the township was changed to Whitehall Township in 1827 when it was ceded to Mahoning County by the Treaty of Greenville between Great Britain and France. In 1830, Whitehall Township became part of the new Cincinnati metropolitan area and lost its own elected township government; county commissioners were appointed instead. In 1908, Whitehall voters approved an ordinance creating a city charter for the town. On July 15, 1909, City Commission voted 3-2 to approve incorporation as a city with a population of 25,000 or more people within 10 years. The incorporation date was set for November 2nd but on October 6th Mayor Gifford delivered notices to all residents that if they did not move into their homes by November 2nd he would consider force annexation intoAkron-Canton-Muncie which would have effectively ended any hope for annexation because white flight from Cleveland had already begun). On December 14th 1907 John Denton purchased 8 acres (3 ha) north of Main Street in what is now downtown Whitehall from Hemanus Wetherbee for $1 per acre (.50¢ per sq ft). This property became known as "Denton's Hill". Denton laid out lots on this land until he sold it off piecemeal over several years starting in 1865 until finally receiving title thereto on January 4th 1870 through a deed from George Washington Carver Sr.. In 1898 when white settlement began moving into central Ohio there were few buildings or anything practical available on Denton's Hill so settlers built dwellings outbuildings such as churches and schools prior to 1800s when most people built homes near water sources where they could fish or hunt game during open seasons
