The National Guard of Westlake, Ohio was organized on December 12, 1907. The first unit to be sworn in as a part of the National Guard was Company K, 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment. Company K was mobilized on November 9, 1908 and served at Camp Chase in Athens Township for the duration of World War I. Company L was organized on December 16, 1909 and served at Camp Grant from February 1912 to September 1914. On April 17, 1915 the 1st Battalion (5th Regiment) of the National Guard departed Cleveland for service with Great Britain in World War I. When the men returned they were met by crowds of cheering citizens who had come to provide them with gifts including automobiles and rifles. The battalion arrived back in Cleveland on October 3rd and soon after took up its new post at Park Hills Armory where it remained until 1922 when it disbanded due to lack of soldiers left fit for military service during WWI. In 1922 the 1st Battalion (5th Regiment) reactivated under command of the 4th Brigade Combat Team headquartered at Bedford Heights Armory and continued service until 1932 when it also disbanded due to lack of soldiers left fit for military service during WWII
Westlake, Ohio is a census-designated place (CDP) in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1868 by Samuel Westlake and his brother Edward Westlake as a railroad junction for the new Muskegon & Lansing Railroad. The name comes from Old French "Westervelde" which means "westward from here". As of the 2000 U.S. Census, there were 1,811 people living in Westlake CDP who identified themselves as being black or African American, 751 as white, and 158 as Hispanic or Latino of any race. 10% of the population reported being Hindu/Brahmin and 8% reported being Buddhist or Jain

Westlake is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Butler and Medina counties. The population was 18,589 at the 2010 census. Westlake was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1795 as a small village on the east bank of the Scioto River near what is now downtown Akron. It became a town in 1846 and a city in 1907. The name "Westlake" comes from an old Indian word meaning "west bank." The first settlers to what is now Westlake were traders from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who traveled down the Scioto River to trade with native natives. In 1795, General James Wilkinson built his home on what is now cornerState Route 22 and State Route 183 (now Muskegon Ave.). He named his settlement after himself - Westlake Village. On November 3, 1800, he sent a letter to the Ohio General Assembly requesting that they establish an academy at his location for young men to learn military skills and better engage in politics and commerce; this request was granted six months later on January 10th, 1801! At this time, only 8 residents lived in Westlake Village - four men and four women! By 1830 there were over 100 people living within walking distance of Wilkinson's home! Wilkinson served as Mayor of Westlake from 1847-1849 and 1850-1851 before being electedGovernor of Ohio in December 1850 defeating incumbent John Nicholas Hensley! As Governor he created government land surveys which helped lay out much of central Ohio including portions of Akron and Canton! He also promoted railroads throughout central Ohio!, helping make Cleveland one of America's largest cities! In 1861 he ran for President but lost to Abraham Lincoln! After leaving office he returned to live at his estate until his death on October 9th, 1902 at age 89 years old!! In 1907 Westlake became part of the newly formed municipality of Akron which had been established by state legislature following passage ofvolume No. 234 entitled Municipal Corporations And Other Legislation Of The United States Of America (1906). This act provided for creationof municipal corporations throughout all sections territorial Oklahomasan territory east OF THE RIVER NATIONAL FOREST line & south OF THE CANDLEMAKER'S LINE... In compliance With said Act I organized my City into nine wards viz: 1st Ward- East Side 2d Ward- Downtown 3d Ward- Northwest Side 4th Ward- South Side 5th Ward- Southwest Side 6th Ward- Central Area 7thWard – North Side 8thWard – South side !!! Also organized were two Rural Municipalities viz: Clinton Township & Union Township

In 1937, the town erected a monumental stone monument to commemorate General Wilkinson and his wife.
