Westlake is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westlake is located on the southern edge of Akron and is bordered by Middletown to the north, Uniontown to the east, and Shaker Heights to the south. The first permanent settler in what would become Westlake was Jacob Appelbaum in 1796. He had been granted land by Colonel John Harrison for his military service during the Revolutionary War. The first house built in what would become Westlake was erected on this site by Captn David Ford in 1814. In 1819, about 20 acres (8 hectares) of land were patented to John Dolan for $5 per acre ($255 at current prices). This piece of property became known as "Dolan's Hill". During much of its early history, Westlake functioned as a small farming community with only one schoolhouse and one storey homes being built until it became a town in 1903 when it incorporated under an act passed by the Ohio General Assembly In 1907, Hockessin Rubber Company opened its new plant onancock avenue which generated significant job growth for residents and businesses over ensuing decades The village green adjacent to North High School houses several parks including Lake Erie Park and South Shore Park which offer nature trails that lead from downtown Westlake into neighboring townships . One mile east from center city boundaries off Shiawassee Avenue are two blocks long named after three prominent local businesswomen: Mrs . Edwin Forrest (1867-1941), Mrs . Westlake is a village in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,718 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The village was organized on December 12, 1824 when land was donated to it by General Anthony Wayne and his wife Lucy. The town of Westlake grew up around the village until 1881 when it became an independent city. On February 15, 1896, Westlake incorporated as a town after voting by its citizens to do so over the objections of the new city of Cleveland. The city annexed the villages of Bellefontaine and Mount Pleasant in 1903 and 1912 respectively. The Village folded due to high defaults on its bonds in 1917 and 1918; however, it re-formed with help from $2 million from local businesses led by banker Jerald Walford Sr.. In 1922 Walford sold most of his interest to businessman George Fenton who built several large homes including one now known as "Fenton Hall". In 1933 Fenton merged with other businesses into what is now called FirstEnergy Corporation which remains headquartered there today. In 1957 FirstEnergy merged with American Electric Power Company (AEP) forming one of America's largest electric companies. AEP later dissolved into UEEco Incorporated in 2000 as part of American Electric Power Company's spin-off from Edwards Electric Industries plc..
Westlake was once a part of the Township of Cuyahoga. TheVillage of Westlake was organized in 1811, and the first store opened in that year by Joshua Hovell. In 1814, a post office was established at Westlake, and until 1830, mail was carried on horseback between Mentor and Westlake. In 1830, a railroad was completed through the township, and as a result, many businesses moved to the new town. The first school in Westlake opened in 1837. In 1865, most of what is now downtown Westlake were developed as part of an effort to increase commerce and tourism in the area. The city hall building was built on land donated by banker Samuel Sibley in 1902. On November 5th of that year, Mayor John Prentice dedicated the new City Hall Complex which included four streetscapes including One Hundred Acres Park & Recreation Area The city has since grown significantly with more than 21 thousand residents within its limits today!
