Westerville was founded in 1795 by a group of Dutch colonists. The town was first known as "New Utrecht." In 1801, the United States acquired Ohio from Great Britain and renamed it the Territory of Ohio. Westerville became a part of the new state of Ohio in 1803. In 1825, Westerville incorporated as a city. In 1907, the City Council adopted an ordinance establishing street names starting with "E" for east and "W" for west.
