The Westerville, Ohio National Guard is one of the oldest and most active military organizations in the United States. The Guard was founded on July 16, 1795 and has served as a bulwark against Native American attacks and internal unrest throughout the years. Today, the Westerville, Ohio National Guard consists of over 12,000 men and women who are duly sworn to serve our country with distinction. They are protectors of our borders, custodians of our liberties, and providers of essential services to all Americans. national guard gift history can be traced back to 1795 when the Westerville Township Committee decided to establish a militia force in order to keep up with local threats from Native Americans. At first it was just a group of volunteers but soon enough these soldiers were needed for tasks such as guarding highways and bridges. In 1807, the Township Committee authorized an appropriation for uniforms and equipment for two companies of light infantrymen. These units would become known as Company A (the Whites) and Company B (the Blacks). In 1814-1815 some white officers were appointed to command both Companies A & B which increased their size by 10%. Over time until 1865 there were only six full-time Commanding Officers while battalion commanders rotated through every company three times per year. This lack of organization led to many incidents where troops didn’t know what they were supposed to do or when they should arrive at their destination due to conflicting orders received from higherups( colonelcy etc.). During World War II there was an increase in troop deployments due largely because President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered America into war based on his rationale that Nazi Germany posed a threat not only economically but also militarily which included building airfields in Europe that could be used for bombing raids against U.S citizens living there( this event is called Pearl Harbor). After Pearl Harbor happened Congress passed The Defense Production Act which provided money for armaments manufacturers like Ford Motor Co., Lockheed Aircraft Corp., General Electric Co., Boeing Aircraft Co., Raytheon Co., Winchester Repeating Arms Factory etc.) so America could buy weapons not just for themselves but also sell them offworld( including Japan). This process began with Roosevelt signing Executive Order 9066 which established rules about military procurement leading upto Attack on December 7th 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour without warning America thus starting World War II! During WWII nearly 3 million men lost their lives serving our country not counting those who died during combat or while working in support roles such as firefighters or nurses………. today we still remember those servicemen with solemn ceremonies across the nation every Veterans Day…..

The Westerville, Ohio National Guard was formed on Dec. 12, 1903 as the result of a merger of the two older volunteer organizations in town- the Volunteer Fire Department and the Police Department. At its peak there were over 2,000 men and women working for the National Guard in Westerville. The National Guard has played an important role in our community since it was created. It is responsible for providing security at local events such as elections, funerals and other special occasions. The Guard also helps to maintain order during protests and demonstrations.
