When Union forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Westerville sent its citizens to fight on behalf of their country. Afterward, many residents moved away from Westerville because they didn't feel safe again under Confederate rule. Westerville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 44,684 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Mahoning County. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westerville were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the region in 1795-96 on their missionary journey from Quebec to preach Christianity to indigenous people living along the Great Lakes region. The area that includes Westerville today was originally known as "Hancock Township" because Colonel George Hancock, a signer of the United States Constitution, resided there during its early years. In 1806, when Hawkins Township became part of Mahoning County, Colonel George Hancock's home became its second town site; however, due to lack of land or political subdivision boundaries at that time, Hancock's town site never grew beyond a few houses and shops until it was annexed by Westerville in 1837. In 1837, Cornelius Vanderbilt purchased 640 acres (262 hectares) east of what is now downtown Westerville for $1 million from John Crain and opened up what would become his flagship cotton plantation called "Vanderbilt Landing." When he died in 1886 his estate passed into public ownership and has been operated as an agricultural research center ever since by The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTCH). On July 1st 1909 local authorities renamed Westerville as "Mahoning Heights", honoring General James WorthyMahone (1784-1862), who served as military governor general of Ohio during President Andrew Jackson's administration. In honorof WorthyMahonethe mayor presented him with a bronze tablet at City Hall on July 15th 1912 which still stands there today! On January 2nd 1923 another important event happened when The Athletic Club moved into their current building on Union Street; this building still stands today and hosts many events throughout the year including concerts by popular rock bands like GNR and Whitesnake! On May 12th 1928 new municipal limits were set forth within Mahoning County which included areas adjacent to present day Westervileno small towns such as Avon Lake (now Defiance), Lebanon Junction (now Lima), Northfield Heights (now Westfield), Springboro Heights(now Rossford), Whitehall Heights(now Xenia)and much more! This made room for other municipalities within Mahoning County such as Mount Carmel (later Romeoville)and Berea(later Reynoldsburg)! Today all but one townshiphips within Mahoning County are located inside Greater Cleveland metropolitan area according to2010 US Census figures! . . . As can be seen from this map it appears that even though much has changed over time with annexations/mergers etc., much basic character remains same especially given our location within central Ohio sandwiched between Cleveland & Cincinnati
