Westerville is a town in the Geauga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,251 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Westerville was Levi Coffin in 1812. In 1815, Colonel John Smith established a log cabin on what is now known as State Street. By 1830, a post office had been established and by 1840, Wrightsville had also grown up around it. However, until the early 1800s most of Westerville was rural farmland with few buildings other than outhouses and barns. The area that would become Westerville was first settled by Native Americans who hunted and gathered game there before moving west to more fertile soil elsewhere. In 1825, two brothers named James and Job Weeden founded the village of Utica which became an important commercial center for much of Geauga County during the period when transportation was still by horse or wagon rather than by cars or trucks today. In 1827-28 James Weeden built a dam on Beaver Creek which powered his mill which produced flour for local merchants and provided beer for settlers in nearby Lancaster and Muskingum Counties while they waited for railroads to be built that could bring goods east to marketplaces such as Cleveland (then called “the Great Lakes”) and Cincinnati (then called “Plymouth”). This began what would become known as the Erie Canal era in American history - businesses grew along both sides of this major waterway thanks to burgeoning trade between new America and Europe via this route. Westerville's growth spurt continued into the late 19th century with larger businesses coming into town including paper manufacturers Griffin & Co., Seagram Distillers (later Anheuser Busch), Coca Cola Bottling Company (later PepsiCo), LoewsHotels & Casino Resort ( later MGM Grand Hotel), Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, Macy's Department Store, Ackerman Electric Cooperative Union No.( later Greater Cleveland Community Union). Additionally many small shops started up throughout downtown like J&J Barber Shop (later Allstate Auto Parts), Blacksmith Shop(later Western Star Coal Mining Company), Butcher Shop(later Tomahawk Meat Market), Hardware Store(now Home Depot) etcetera giving Westerville its current mix of several dozen business districts within one large central core surrounded by smaller neighborhoods/districts containing their own businesses units collectively known as "Downtown". In 1916 when Ohio passed an act providing statehood for Geauga County; Westerville became one of its first settlements with families moving from other parts of Ohio over that year alone to join those arriving from Geauga County. At various points during World War I additional population increases took place due to military enlistments or increased agricultural production; however no permanent residents came until after World War II when suburbanization accelerated following rapid industrial growth in Toledo-Cleveland areas southward across Lake Erie led to demands for open space within easy commuting distance of jobsites around Euclid Heights Mall outside Cleveland proper while western suburbs grew increasingly sprawling beyond city limits into neighboring townships such as Lyndhurst Township even though neither party saw fit Prior thereto annexation requests being granted without any fanfare whatsoever only after protracted public hearings typically attended by mayorsalty members presiding over seemingly endless hordes OF ARMED MEN!
