Westerville, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Champaign County. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. Westerville is home to Belmont University, one of America's largest private universities, as well as two other colleges and several businesses including Belmont College's Medical School and Children's Hospital Westerville. The first permanent settler in what would become Westerville was Abram Brown in 1814 when he built a cabin on the east side of the Little Miami River. He named his land "Westerville" after his brother-in-law, John Westervelt who had also settled in that area some years earlier. In 1826 David Ladd bought a tract of land from Abram Brown, naming it "Belmont." By 1830 all but one block on which the town now stands had been purchased by citizens for $1 per acre with an initial payment of $5 per family. The Town plat shown to the public does not exist and it is presumed that this plat was never actually filed with the recorder until sometime later when money became available for its filing fee A post office called Westerville was established in 1828, and remained in operation until 1870. It was then renamed Champaign County Courthouse Square Post Office because most of its activity took place there between court proceedings or executive meetings instead of being conducted anywhere else within Champaign County In 1836 David Ladd organized what would become known as the First Presbyterian Church (now Belmont University). Reverend James Guthrie served as pastor from 1840 to 1850 By 1860 only 8 people lived in Westervil
