It is the second-largest city in Greater Cincinnati and it is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati Metropolitan Area. The name Westerville may be derived from its original location on high ground overlooking the Scioto River which served as a source of water for mills and other businesses. The first settler to arrive in what is now Westerville was John Westervelt who settled in 1795. In 1811, General Anthony Wayne's army invaded Ohio and destroyed all but one of the villages along the Scioto River before reaching Westerville. The village had been founded by Peter Sellers as a trading post between Hereford County and Delaware County. After General Wayne's victory over Ulysses S Grant at Fallen Timbers in 1812, settlers began arriving from all over eastern Ohio to settle in what became known as "the Western Reserve." Within a few years of its founding, Westerville had become an important commercial center with its own courthouse and bank. In 1825, authorities built a new millrace on the Scioto River which quickly became an important transportation artery for goods moving eastward through downtown Cincinnati into central Ohio

Westerville, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Butler County. The population was 382 at the 2000 census, making Westerville the most populous city in Butler County. It is located on the Scioto River in central Ohio and is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Westerville was Nicholas Hickey, who arrived on July 24, 1796 from Hartford, Connecticut. He named his new community for Countess Catherine von Ziegler-Harrisonburg of Germany (1765-1847), daughter of royal governor George Washington's sister Maria Anna von Ziegler-Harrisonburg. In 1801, Jno.[1] Sibley began construction on a grist mill which he named "The Blockhouse", because it stood on Castle Hill overlooking the Scioto River near where present day State Route 7 intersects US Highway 11. The village grew rapidly around this mill and by 1810 there were 10 dwellings with a total population of 509 people including Hickey's heirs and their families! By 1830, Westerville had over 200 residents; however, many fled after Indian raids during President Andrew Johnson's War (1865-1867). The first store was built by Captn[2] Fenton Marcy in 1825 just south of present day State Route 7 West between High Street and Spring Streets. A second store was built about two miles to the east along High Street between Park Avenue and Clinton Avenue; both stores were operated by Captain John Purdy until he died in 1850. About this time also came streetcars to Westerville from Youngstown via Bloomfield Road providing transportation for goods to retail customers across town while Hamilton College students attended classes at nearby Central High School! There were no schools until 1868 when local school trustee [3] Uriah Howe Elementary School openedsite west of Main Street as an addition to what became Community Schools District #5 following annexation by that district from Township #2! Heinrich Rheingold donated land east side of Main Street between Clinton Avenue and Spring Streets for use as a public square; northeast corner still stands today as Ewing Plaza! This area would come to be known as Westerviller Square after Dutch architect Pieter van der Hasselt designed a design for such a plaza complex which never materialized due to lack of financial support from his friends! That same year saw construction begin on what would eventually become First Congregational Church (later First United Methodist Church) located at 222 Elmira Place north latitude/longitude 44° 02' 32" W/ 0° 20' 05" N facing west; one acre lot given for church site had 2 churches erected: steeple & nave only = $6000—a third church building soon followed = $8000raised—congregational services begun 1st Sep 1870 @ 9 PM !!First united Methodist Church Easter Service 1886–87!!In memory ol Pastor Geoge Voorhis w/ Rev Dr [4] Seymour Richards
