Westerville, Ohio is a city in the Cincinnati metropolitan area and the largest municipality within that area. The population was 62,923 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Cincinnati, just north of downtown. Westerville has been an important port town for centuries and its maritime history can be found throughout its community today. In 1802, General David Wilkinson founded Westerville as a military post on the Scioto River in what is now Delaware Township. He named it after his father-in-law, William Westervelt of New York City. Afterward, Westerville became one of America's most important seaports with warehouses and wharves stretching out into both riverine and land environments. The first permanent settler in Westerville was Drury brothers John and James Haggerty who built a cabin on what is now Middlefield Road in 1793. By 1800, there were over 50 people living in Westerville. A mill was built by Eli Whitney near Prospect Avenue in 1802; it remains one of Ohio's oldest mills still operating today (it ceased operations in 1917). In 1807, President James Kapp appointed Colonel George Rogers Clark as Commandant of Fort Dearborn to help protect American interests along the Great Lakes from British forces under Lieutenant Governor Sir George Prevost.. Clark's successor as Commandant - Brigadier General Nicholas Christofile - made significant improvements to fortifications here including creating a large magazine capable of holding 10normals rounds per minute which doubled as ammunition storage for his troops when needed during their campaigns against Tecumseh Sherman's Indian Wars across Canada (northern Illinois) and Michigan Territory (southwestern Wisconsin). Westerville was founded in 1795 by Christopher Columbus. The city was named after the Westerwald, a region of Germany that Columbus had explored and discovered. The area that would become Westerville was part of what is now Delaware County when it was organized in 1800. In 1811, the town voted to move from its original location on the Scioto River because of the difficult terrain and lack of water resources. It moved to its current location on High Street in 1824. By 1827, Westerville had a population of about 100 people and several businesses were established including a woolen mill and wagon shop. In 1830, Westerville became a town charter with a population of about 350 people. It experienced some growth during the American Civil War but ultimately lost its status as an independent city after Union forces burned down most of their factories in 1865.
