Westerville is a city in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Hamilton County and fifth most populous city in the state of Ohio. Westerville was founded by Methodists in 1814 as a small town on the Scioto River near where it now stands. The name Westerville originated from an old English word meaning "place where wheat is grown." In 1869, coal mining began in the area and made Westerville one of the largest coal cities in America. It declined during World War II because of bombings by American forces and with new industries coming to town, but has since rebounded and regained its former prosperity. The current form of government for Westerville was created in 1995 when City Council adopted an ordinance creating a mayor-council system with two mayoral terms instead of four years as under normal municipal governments throughout America. The first mayor, Hilda Sorenson, served two terms before she retired after being elected to serve her third term (2013-2018). On July 1st 2018 Mayor Hilda Sorenson announced that she will be stepping down effective December 31st 2018 due to health reasons which have been underlying for some time now

Westerville is a city in the United States, located in the central part of Ohio. As of 2010, the population was 88,545. Westerville was founded by Nicholas Ballou and others in 1810 as a small village on the Scioto River. The village grew to become an incorporated town in 1907 and became a city in 2001. The city is named after General James K. Polk, who served as president from 1845-1849. In 2008, Westerville became one of twenty cities for which America's Urban Infrastructure Future report identified it as having "significant infrastructure needs." The area now known as Westerville was first inhabited by the Shawnee people. Captain John betrayed his Indian enemies during battle and ran away with some of their warriors into Ohio territory where he founded what would eventually be called Westerville on December 31st, 1797 at what is now Jackson Road and High Street. A group of Englishmen arrived at Scioto Bay on July 12th, 1795 seeking passage to India to trade with the natives. Under guidance of Commodore John Ross they landed at Scioto Bay on October 15th but were met by Native Americans who destroyed their vessel before departing for good that day according to Captain Phillips journal entry: “We found no water hereabouts so we returned again this evening about sunset without finding any” (Journals 2: 323). It appeared that either no one had gone ashore or there had been an attack by friendly Indians which probably never happened because thereafter Europeans began landing regularly at various points along the bay until February 3rd when they encountered hostile blockade runners while sailing through Buzzard’s Bay looking forsupplies en route to China(Morse 9: 207-8). After these encounters Europeans disappeared from local areas until July 1800 when Act No 1of1812 authorized construction of defenses against possible French incursions(Granberry 10: 377). This act enabled General Wayne to build Fort Carillon which later became Cadet College.(Powell 827; Granberry 10: 378) In 1810 Nicholas Ballou came across land near today’s Westerville – now within Union City – selling it him for $400 dollars plus ten acres (today’s community center square) adjacent to his farmstead (Fowler 7/1/2008 interview). On December 5th, 1810 Ballou filed a plat withthe County Courthouse containing boundaries for what would become present-day Westerville (Fowler 7/1/2008 interview). Over time new land was sold and annexed into Westervilletotalizing at over 100 acres including today’s downtown square In 1907 Butterfield & Company built their first store in what is now downtown Westervilletoprobably using money raised from sales tax levied on mills within two miles of proposed business site (Fowler 7/1/2008 interview). By 1912 Butterfield & Company employed 50 men full time manufacturing products such as radios, typewriters and bicycles outfitted with Singer sewing machinesin addition to other amusements such as games room open 24 hours per day(Lambert 911; Brownell 671; Fowler 7/1/2008 interview). Machine tools produced during this period include Hammond saws manufactured by George Hammond are still used todayat Friendly Mills(Lambert 911; Brownell 671; Fowler 7/1/2008 interview).
