The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the largest and most powerful military organizations in the world. It has been a part of the U.S. since World War II, and today it employs over 197,000 people across fifty-eight airfields around the country. The USAF is responsible for conducting nuclear deterrence, global strike capabilities, and providing humanitarian assistance in times of crisis. The USAF gift history began with the creation of theAAF in 1947 as an independent branch of the armed forces. One of its earliest gifts was a letter from General Douglas MacArthur to Air Chief Marshal Leigh-Mallory expressing his admiration for RAF Bomber Command’s exploits during World War II. The RAF had borne the brunt of America’s strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany, and MacArthur wanted to show his appreciation by gifting some Spitfires to Britain’s wartime allies. In 1951, President Truman awarded General Curtis LeMay “the Medal of Honor” for his contributions to American airpower during World War II. LeMay had lead American bomber operations against Japan during that conflict and later became commander-in-chief of U.S Strategic Air Command (SAC). In 1980, he was posthumously awarded another award – the Distinguished Flying Cross – for his role in Operation Desert Storm*. By 1994, American airforces were fielding more than 150 different types*of aircraft*! Today, USAF Gift History continues to be an important facet of US military policy.* In 2013*, United States Senator Sherrod Brown announced plans to give $500 million towards scholarships at West Point* - one of America's top military academies *! And last but not least, on November 14th*, five Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning IV jets were delivered into service with Marine Corps ground units at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma Washington*. These jets will help keep America safe while carrying out their aerial refueling duties!

The Ohio Air National Guard's Westerville, Ohio detachment started operating in the early 1920s. Tours of duty were often shorter than those seen by other units and officers in the organization at that time. The wing was activated during World War II as a result of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's call for an increased air defense force. It was not until 1947 when the wing became operational as an independent unit and began providing aerial support to military operations throughout the Midwest.
Westerville, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Mercer County. The population was 54,427 at the 2010 census, making Westerville one of the most populous towns in Ohio. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first settler in Westerville was Isaac Morse who came to the area in 1814. The town was named after George Washington Westervelt, an American politician and delegate to the United States Congress from New York City from 1792-1795 and governor of New York from 1798-1800. In 1830, James Kapp purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) near present-day Westerville for $5 per acre ($2 million today). He renamed it "Westerville" after his home county in Virginia where he had been born and raised. Kapp's mill did significant business until it closed during World War II because of wartime leanings towards munitions production rather than agriculture; however, his son Jacob still operates a mill now located on State Route 7 just east of downtown Westerville. The USAF gift history begins with the establishment of the USAF in 1947. The USAF was created as a military aviation service to support the United States war effort. In its early years, the USAF was limited to aerial refueling and airlift operations. However, during World War II, the USAAF became one of the most powerful militaries in the world due to its bomber capabilities. The USAAF played an important role in defeating Nazi Germany and Japan and helped bring about World War III. In 1945, after World War III ended, the USAF was transformed into a stand-alone service. The USAF is composed of more than 30 agencies that provide services such as reconnaissance, air warfare support, logistics and manning forces. Since its establishment, the USAF has donated significant assets and manpower to numerous causes including peacekeeping efforts in Africa, Operation Desert Storm in Iraq and Afghanistan, disaster relief efforts aroundthe world and many others. Many individuals within both civilian and military communities have contributed their time or money to improve Air Force facilities or contribute toAir Force programs across all sectors of society. Today’s Air Force Gift History highlights some of these enduring traditions while also recognizing some recent successes.

Westerville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located along the Scioto River. The population was 36,898 at the 2010 census. Westerville was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and his soldiers during the War of 1812. The city was named after Wilhelm von Westervelt, an officer who served with Wilkinson in Canada during that war. In 1825, Wilkinson sold the city to John Dicken for $1,500. Dicken renamed Westerville "The New City" and began to build a town square on what is now Main Street. He also built a Masonic Lodge and improved transportation by building a wharf on the Scioto River for shipping goods from Cincinnati to Cleveland and vice versa. Dicken's descendants continued to live in Westerville until its annexation by Cleveland in 1922. During World War II, many Dutch Americans living near Cleveland came to get work as munitions workers; this led to the nickname "The Munitions Milltown". After World War II ended, many Dutch people left Westerville, but some remain today as residents of nearby Gahanna or Parma Township (which includes Dearborn Heights). In 1970, Mayor Edward Miano declared October 15th "Dutch American Heritage Day" in recognition of this community's history and culture.Named after Mayor Miano On that day, streets were renamed honoring local Dutch American citizens: Hennepin Avenue became Amersfoort Boulevard; Holland Avenue became Ewing Avenue; Wickham Road became Wilcox Avenue; and parts of Clinton Park were renamed Rudolph Boulevard and Holland Drive.
