West Carrollton City, Ohio is a city in thecommonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States. The population was 13,977 at the 2010 census. It is located in Butler County on the southeastern border of Pittsburgh. The town was founded by John West in 1792 as West Pointeville after his purchase of land from donation from the Monongahela tribe and the main road running through it became known as "The Western Road." In 1824, James Buchanan bought 2,000 acres (800 hectares) east of town from John West for $2,000 and quickly founded Buchanan's Corners which served as a commercial center for much of Butler County. In 1839, shortly before he died, James Buchanan donated 1/3rd of all remaining land in Butler County to form what would become West Carrollton City. He had been inspired to do this because he felt that if new settlers could learn about and appreciate their predecessors' cultures then they would be more likely to want to stay here and make their own contributions to society. West Carrollton City prospered economically until World War II when production fell due to wartime shortages of materials such as metals and labor. However, during postwar years both business and population growth began anew thanks in part to post-war immigration including many Polish Americans who found work in manufacturing plants throughout western Pennsylvania. Today, West Carrollton City is a vibrant community with outstanding opportunities for education, commerce and government service providing support for its diverse citizens.
