West Carrollton City is located in the southeast corner of Cuyahoga County and is bordered by Cleveland to the east, Uniontown to the north, and Huron Heights to the west. In 1831, James A. Garfield was elected as President of the United States and he moved his family from Virginia to Ohio so that they could be closer to their new country. The Garfields were among the first Americans to settle in what is now known as Ohio. In 1832, Garfield was elected as Mayor of West Carrollton City which at that time consisted only of a few houses around Main Street. He quickly organized a town government with four voting members who met every other week for business purposes inside one of three churches located on University Avenue between East Ninth Street and East Tenth Street. West Carrollton City was founded in 1836 by James S. West and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after James's brother, John Carroll, who had moved to the area from Ohio in 1795. The first school in West Carrollton was built on a farm owned by Amos McGee and operated by students from nearby Defiance School District. In 1840, the citizens of West Carrollton voted to incorporate as a township. On January 1, 1846, the township became a village when two other townships within it merged into it. In 1861, the village of West Carrollton split off from the township and became its own independent community. In 1888 it changed its name to Erie Township due to land sales conducted in that year between the Erie Railroad Company and several eastern Pennsylvania landowners interested in forming what would become known as Round Lake Township (the name given to both townships until they were recombined into one municipality). In 1922, Erie Township lost its separate status and merged with neighboring Defiance Township to form what is now West Carrollthon City.
