West Carrollton City is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of West Carrollton was platted in 1788 when land was donated to the new state of Ohio by Sir Charles Booth. The first post office in the town was established in 1801 and remained open until 1861. In 1827, John Dillard founded the village of Dayton on land donated by James Caldwell. Both villages were incorporated as townships in 1841 and again as cities in 1865. The village of Dayton renamed itself West Carrollton after General David Silliman who served as commander of American forces during the War for Independence. During World War II, West Carrollton became home to two largest military installations in America—the Great Lakes Naval Training Station (GLNTS) and Camp Humphreys (CHH). In 1978, West Carrollton became an all-city municipality with a Mayor/Council form of government under which it operates as a single unit with many separate departments and services within its control such as education, administration, law enforcement, fire protection and parks & recreation. The economy base for West Carrollton City has been primarily centered around manufacturing jobs since before this area even had a real estate market! West Carrollton City was a small town in central Ohio from the late 1800s until it merged with other towns in 1992. The town was located on the north side of Carroll County, about 12 miles east of Dayton. The first people to live in what is now West Carrollton City were Native Americans who hunted and fished in the area during the early days of European settlement. In 1814, the area was part of an agreement between Great Britain and United States under which United States territorial claims were exchanged. The land that would become West Carrollton City was part of this exchange, and when it became a part of the United States, English settlers began to come to live there. In 1824, James Robertson established a farm near what is now West Carrollton City. It is believed that he named his farm after his home country, Scotland. By 1830, more than 50 Scots had moved to join Robertson on his farm. Over time, many other Scots joined him on his farm and started their own businesses: cattle raising, grocery stores and distilleries. Robertson's Distillery still stands today and produces whisky under the name "Old No3". Another early business in West Carrollton was Mr. Fenton's Furniture Store which operated from 1835-1846. This store also served as a post office for some time before being closed down due to population growth within the community itself; however, one building still stands today as evidence of its former existence: The Robert Siegel House (now known as The Parsonage). It wasn't until 1840 that commissioners decided that West Carrollton should have its own school district; at this point only three homes were available for use as schools - two were too far away for students to be reached by walking or riding horses back and forth between them each day (the third house would not be built until 1860). A committee was formed to choose a site for the new school district – one result of which saw construction begin on North Main Street near where present-day State Route 6 meets Interstate 71; South Main Street served as the village square at this point! On November 15th, 1841 – exactly one year after construction began –West Carrollton School opened its doors! With just 7 pupils enrolled in grades 1-4 (grades 1-6 are currently offered through charter schools), but thanks largely to donations by local farmers/ businessmen John Hiebert and Wm Brownell (alderman at that time), additional classrooms were soon added along with gymnasium space; first grade classes continued operations out behind Mr., later becoming Mrs., Hiebert’s garage! In addition to these basic needs such as teachers’ salaries government funding came into play starting with $2 per week per pupil beginning in 1863 allthough instruction really did start getting underway September 9th 1861 thru January 1865 thanks much again goeing into effect thru consolidation efforts among various agencies led by District Superintendent Ransom Barnes . Bellows Academy (later McCoy) opened up Septemer 9th 1865 & lasted thru Feb 25th 1870 before closing due tom lack of enrollment
West Carrollton City was founded in 1892 as a small, unincorporated community in the western part of Ohio. It grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and by 1915 it had reached the size of a full-fledged city. The first mayor of West Carrollton City was John A. Hickey. The city experienced significant growth during World War II, when it became home to an important munitions plant. In 1949, West Carrollton City merged with neighboring cities of Dayton and Springfield to form a new city government. The merger resulted in significant changes for the city, including the addition of a large park system and the installation of new infrastructure such as roads and sewers. In recent years, West Carrollton City has seen considerable development within its limits; in particular, it has become known for its growing population of retirees which has led to increased demand for services such as healthcare and education. As a result, Mayor Hickey is currently working to develop plans that would eventually make West Carrollton City one of Ohio's most livable communities.
